Morphine And Pregnancy

My friend just found out that she is 4 weeks pregnant. About 2 weeks ago she was in an accident and had severe head trama and now has metal plates in her head. While in the hospital they gave her all kinds of medication because she did not know that she was pregnant then. Will drugs like Morphine hurt the baby? Should she worry?

Morphine, if used in the right dosage and not over long periods of time, is a Catagory B drug. That makes it relatively safe to take during pregnancy. The two primary concerns are that it can slow the heartrate of a fetus just as it does the mother. This is typically not dangerous in lower doses. The other concern is addiction. But if she took it that early and that short of a time that should not be a concern. My wife spent a little over a week under observation by a high risk OB due to a chronic illness unrelated to her pregnancy. She was given 4mg of morphine in dosages of up to ever 2 hours. I would tell your friend to try not to worry, but that if she has lingering concerns she should take it up with her OB.
