Spotting During 2nd Trimester

I have had some va___al discharge that is brown in color and I am 14 weeks pregnant. I have gone to see my doctor twice and the only thing he can tell me is that I have a very low lying placenta. I have done nothing to cause stress or trauma to the fetus is that an accurate answer to the random spotting that I'm having?
