Hi, I lost my 1st baby w/an incompetent cervix at 22 weeks. Now I am pregnant w/#2 and I really want to talk to someone who has been through this procedure before. They do an US next week and that determines when my cercelage goes in.Thank you for any help you can give.

I lost my first at 20 weeks due to incompetent cervix. I'm now 33 weeks preg. with our second. My cerclage was placed in at 10 weeks. It is an outpatient procedure. I had an epidural and the procedure took maybe 20 minutes. The cerclage is a life saver. I've been on bed rest for 9 weeks now. My cervix has been measuring short. I have my Dr. measure my cervix once a week. I don't take any chances. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck

To TD: Thank you so much for responding. I go in Monday for an ultra sound to date the baby and make sure everything is okay to go for a cerclage. Then I will get that in 2-3 weeks (will be 11-12 weeks at that time). I have read a lot of conflicting things on the web and none really go past the putting in of the cerclage. So I am going to pick your brain a little bit b/c I want to make sure my doctor and I are doing all we can to keep this baby. Once they put in the cerclage how long till I can go back to my normal routines? Should I take it easy for a day or two- or is 24 hours good? How often should my doctor be checking the cerclage to make sure it is holding? What determines if I should go on bed rest? <last one : ) > Should I ask about being given meds. to help against contractions? Thank you so much for answering my and I am glad to hear you are so far all. Good Luck and Congradulation!

Pennie, I was on bed rest 2 weeks after the cerclage. You will have some spotting after your cerclage placement. When I reached 20 weeks I had my doctor check my cerclage and cervix weekly just to be safe. Losing a baby at 20 weeks was very tramatic, as you well know, so my husband and I didn't want to take any chances. I didn't go back to work after my cerclage. As far as bed rest its really up to your doctor & listen to your body. I never had contractions so I didn't need meds for that however please discuss meds with your Dr. **We are unable to have intercourse throughout this entire preg. **When they check your cerclage it will be by a v____al ultrasound, you will be able to see the st_tch. Please if you have any more questions please ask.
