IUD Pregnancy

I have had a copper IUD in since May 2004. I have loved it, no pills to remember to take, no patches to put on or worry about remembering to change (and I got pregnant on the patch). The last couple of weeks, I have felt "weird". I am tired, peeing all the time, bloated, my b___sts are tender, I just feel like I'm pregnant. I am also about 5 days late for my period. I took a home test today, and it showed up negative, but I just don't know if I believe it...I think it may have been a false positive...and the more I read here, I am thinking that more and more. I am going to go into the doctor on Tuesday and have some blood tests done. We'll see what happens.

can you et pregnant in your tubes

tweetluc - February 9

yes it is called a tubal pregnancy and they are very dangerous and can't go very far. if you think you are having a tubal then you need to talk to your doctor there is usaully a lot of pain involved. you can look them up on the internet to. they are tunal or another name is ectopic pregnancy. you can get more infor on the web. on baby-parenting it says that it can occur in the ovarys, abdomen, cervix, and in the falliopian tubes. the symptoms are- sharp pain in abdomen or pelvis, v____al bleeding, tender abdomen and diziness. the treatment is a procedue called laparoscopy to comfirm it then they may remove the tube at that time or the will sometime do an open srugery to remove the pregnancy. th last option is a chemical called methotrexate that dissolves the pregnancy. that is just a quick overview of it you can look more up on the net just type ectopic pregnancy. lucy

Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had negative pregnancy tests with the Mirena...I have taken 10 tests over the past month and all were negative, but I have blue veins on my b___sts, which have enlarged and I have montgomery tubercles. My lower abdomen has also enlarged. But these negative results keep frustrating me. Anyone relate?

HI Lori, My name is Dianna. I am kinda in the same situation. I have had my mirena for about 6 months. I had it put in 6weeks after my second child. about 6 weeks ago I could not feel the strings so I keep checking after about 3 weeks I made an appointment with my OB. It took another 3 weeks. She could not find the IUD either. So tomorrow I have an appointment for an ultra sound. I feel pregnant and I have taken 2 test at the doctor one urine test and one blood. both were negative. I had a negative blood test when I was pregnant with my first child so I am not totaly convinced. I am really worried about all of this! Where did the IUD go? How far along do you need to be before they can see it in an ultra sound? I am so stressed! I will pray for you and your baby! God bless!

I too have the Mirena IUD. I have had it since my 6 week post-partum check-up(July 28th 2005). I haven't had any problems. But I am having weird symptoms lately. For the past month I have been craving sweets all the time, when i normally don't eat that kind of stuff. Then I gained 6 pounds (obviously a result of all the sugary foods I have been eating, but still). Then I have been bloated a lot and having weird tummy aches, from the top of my abdomen to the bottom. And I have been really tired lately and crabby. So i just bought a two pack of home rpegnancy tests. i have two daughters, one is going to be three in May and the other will be two in June. We weren't going to have more for at least five years. I always read the instructions very carefully, all of them. And it states in the little pamphlet that came with the pg test that "Certain health conditions such as an ovarian cyst or an ectopic pregnancy(a pregnancy outside the uterus) can cause a false or irregular result with your test". I was reading this thread last night and was wondering about all the woman who said they have been getting false results but fealt like they were prego. I guess the only way to be sure is to get a blood test?? I am going to take the test in the morning when the prego hormone HCG is concentrated the highest. I wish everyone the best of luck!

I have had the Mirena IUD for almost three years. This last month had me thinking I was pregnant from all the symptoms I was having. I went to the dr. to have my IUD checked, she could never find it. I have been cramping pretty bad. She scheduled me for a pelvic ultrasound tommorrow to see where it is at. The Dr. also did a blood pregnancy test which was negative, so I was relieved. I am just really anxious to find out what is going on. From this forum there seems to be lots of problems with this IUD. I know once I get this thing out me, I will never get another one again.

I came across this website back in Sept '05 when I found out I was pregnant, after having the copper IUD in place for about 1.5 years with no problems, it had never slipped out or moved around. I just wanted to let everyone know about my experience, in hopes that it might help someone out in a similar situation. I found out I was pregnant at about 8 weeks, I didn't have any symptoms at all, but checked my calendar and realized I had missed two periods. The first doctor I went to told me I was pregnant, but that it was probably a tubal pregnancy because I had an IUD, and that I would most likely miscarry. I had an ultrasound the next day, and it was confirmed that I was pregnant, and it was not a tubal pregnancy, but in my uterus. The doctor called me the following week to tell me that, in fact, he had no idea what would happen in my pregnancy, and that he had done research but couldn't find any kind of stats on what the odds were the pregnancy would go to term. I wish he hadn't told me I would "most likely" have a miscarriage, but I'm glad he was honest afterwards in saying that he actually didn't know. He referred me to an ob/gyn, who didn't have any experience with IUD pregnancies either, but continued to do very quick ultrasounds every few weeks, to confirm I was still pregnant and see where the IUD was. The strings weren't visible, and 3 different doctors tried to find them on different occasions, but no luck. She offered me a choice, to dialate my cervix and take out the IUD (which could possibly cause a miscarriage) or to leave it where it was and see what would happen. Leaving the IUD would not hurt/deform the fetus in any way, but could increase my chance of an infection or early labour. She could offer me no stats or percentages on what might happen if I chose either route, (because there are no stats!) and so I was very confused. The best advice I can say on this is just to go with your gut. And definitely don't let a doctor tell you that you MUST get the IUD out, or MUST leave it in! You always have options (if it's an otherwise normal pregnancy), and there just isn't enough research out there to prove that one option is preferable over another. So in my case, the best option for me was to leave the IUD in place and see what happened. It was very stressful - the idea that I could get an infection or have early labour was looming over my head all the time, and I didn't feel much like celebrating the whole way through my pregnancy, in case things didn't work out. At around 4 months, I had some heavy bleeding for two days and thought it was the end of my pregnancy, but it turned out to be fine. Also, right from the beginning I thought I had a "high risk" pregnancy, but when I went to a different doctor in Toronto, with much more experience in IUD pregnancies, he said that this was a normal pregnancy, the only difference was that they'd have to find the IUD after I'd given birth. After hearing this, I decided to change to midwives, which is what I would've wanted originally, except I had previously been thinking I had this very risky pregnancy. Well, I'm sitting here looking at the most beautiful baby I've ever seen who is perfectly healthy. The IUD was in the placenta, and my body had actually formed this hard calcification around it. Had the IUD not come out when I gave birth, I might have had to go in later to an ob/gyn to have a removal procedure done with a laparoscope, I believe, but luckily it didn't get to that point. So that's my story! I wonder if there is anyone out there who is collecting stats on IUDs and pregnancy, so that women in a few years might know a bit more (statistically speaking) about the best options for the IUD pregnancy. Thanks!

Hey MayMumma!!! WOW, what an amazing journey you have been on and I just wanted to say congratulations!!!! It truly, truly amazing how little babies can overcome any odds! That child is very special and is here for a purpose (as all children and people are). I hope one day that the doctors starting obtaining statistics, etc., due to the fact that I think it is more common for these IUD pregnancies to be happening than the DRs are admitting to. Again, congrats on your new bundle!!!

I've been reading many articles on this page and have found that many of you are saying that you're going to the doctor to see about your situations. I was wondering if you all would please write the outcome of your doctor appointments. I have the Mirena and I myself have questions about it (one being that I feel like a baby is kicking inside of me... what is that?!) So any of you who are posting here, if you go to the doctor, please check back and let us know what was said... Alot of women turn here for answers and "I'm going to the docor tomorrow" doesn't help very much! As to you Lori, scroll down and read the posting dated March 6, 2007. She had this same problem that you are having...

tabithakristine - March 8

Okay, first off I am going to admit that I haven't read all the posts. With that said, I apologize if I repeat anything that has already been said, and if it isn't too much of a bother maybe you could repeat the answer. Here it goes.......lets start with the basic information. My name is Tabitha. I am 23 years old. I tried to get pregnant for 5 years and finally succeeded. I am now the proud mother of a 6 month old son named Elijah. My pregnancy was very hard. I was on bed rest from 6 weeks on, and I did such a good job being on bed rest that Elijah was actually over gestation. I decided when I was 6 months pregnant that I would get an IUD. I decided that for a couple of different reasons. One, I knew how difficult it would be to take care of Elijah if I was on bed rest with another baby and decided I didn't want to take that chance. (It took a long time to become a mom and I am going to be a dang good one.) Two, I am a full time student and just knew the difficulty level with one child was more than I could bear. So, at my 6 week postpartum visit I received the Mirena IUD. I had done my homework and felt confident in my decision. Well, I guess I didn't do my homework as well as I thought. Within the first couple of months it came out!!! I mean really, it came out. Very rare for that to happen, but should have been a sign to me. So I got it put back in. From the beginning I have bleed ma__sively. (Okay, maybe not ma__sively, but enough to make it feel like a ma__sive amount. Let's just say Tampax is in business because of me.) So anyway, the bleeding abruptly stopped like a month ago, which was replaced by spotting and discharge. (Sorry if that is TMI (too much information), but I am a very honest and to the point person when it comes to things like this.) I too have felt the "Braxton Hicks”, nausea, and just a general feeling that I am pregnant. For the past week or two I have felt the string that the IUD is connected to. IT'S COMING OUT AGAIN!!!! So, I decided to do some searching on the internet to ease my fears. Well, I found this sight, and while it didn't ease my fears, it has given me a swift kick in the b___t to call my doctor tomorrow, and comfort in knowing I am not alone. (Not that I would ever wish this on any of you.) So, when I wake up tomorrow I am going to call my doctor and demand that I come in. I am taking no more chances. I am going to have them take the IUD out and get on another form of birth control. (That is my positive thinking....but here comes the negative....) I don't want to say I hope I am not pregnant, because being a mom is a wonderful gift, but I just would like to be more prepared. I hope that the news I receive lets me choose when I add an addition to my family and not just a "SURPRISE!!!” Well, I will update you on my progress, promise Christy. Take care and good night.

Here is my update: My IUD is in a perfect place. However, I am still spotting and cramping almost daily. (I got my IUD in July 06). I had an u/s done on Tues. My left ovary is double the size of my right ovary. The dr. also showed me all the follicles on my ovary where I have tried to ovulate. My ovary looks like swiss cheese from it. I don't know if my body is releasing more eggs b/c of the progesterone, but b/c of the IUD, it stops? I am having it taken out soon. I am sick of the severe cramping and spotting. It gets old. Good luck to everyone with their IUDs!!!

mlb8801 - March 9

Here is my update: In May 2006, couldn't find the strings, felt pregnant, took numerous HP tests, and went to the doctor...after ultrasound and blood work I was not pregnant, but they did find a "complex ovarian cyst" that needed to be followed up a month later. Two weeks later I had severe right sided pain (which I already had been having left sided pain, but was told that nothing was there) and then went to the doctor again. I was told that the cyst was gone and not to worry about anything. I had my Mirena IUD taken out Jan '07, as we are trying for another baby - BUT, I will never, ever get another IUD again. I felt pregnant most of the time, bloated, tender b___sts, morning sickness, the whole thing - I even think I might have been pregnant a couple of times the 2 years that I had the IUD, with accompanied heavy periods...but was told that it was "impossible." The procedure was extremely simple - in fact, I wish I had done it sooner - much, much less painful than when they put it in - and I only bled for 2 days after that. So, we are crossing our fingers and am hoping that we can get pregnant soon - I have been ovulating! Anyhow, that is my follow-up.

I have had an iud for about two years. i just found out today that i'm pregnant. i have two boys who are 2 1/2 yrs old and 4 yrs old and well although i'm happy i'm pregnant it sure is a shock. was planning on attending school f/t in the fall. hope that the baby is o.k. and not in the fallopian tube. am going to the dr. on tuesday to have the iud removed.

cxavier312 - March 9

Just an update. I went to the dr. today to find out where it was. It was in place but the strings where up above my cervix. I had my dr. remove it, which was pretty painless. I already feel better just having it out a few hours now. I am going to try the pill yaz and see how it does for me.

msneon - March 9

To "tabithakristine": Do you mean that you feel the plastic where the string is connected? BC you are suppost to feel the string, that's how you check it. Also, did the first one fall out because your body hadn't shrunk down to normal size yet from having your baby? Also, as an update to my earlier post, I went to the doc and they said I was not preggo, and it must have been 'gas' or 'muscle spasms' that cause the kicking. I know that once they told me that (I was dissapointed, btw) and I quit thinking about the 'kicks' then they sorta went away. I don't know if I still have them or not, but if I do I just don't notice them. Hope this helps. :)
