Dear Anai,
Since becoming pregnant, my doctor has checked my blood pressure during every single visit. Is this normal or do I have something to worry about?
A: It is very normal to have your blood pressure checked with each doctor visit - pregnant or not. During pregnancy it becomes especially important, since it may detect complications.
Anything over 140/90 can be looked at as a sign of pregnancy-induced hypertension (aka PIH). If it was normally over 140/90 before and during the first few weeks of your pregnancy, it is called aggravated hypertension. This can lead to either superimposed preeclampsia or superimposed eclampsia.
High blood pressure aggravated by pregnancy will go back to normal after delivery. If it is in the extreme, bed rest will be ordered until the baby is at the stage where induced delivery or c-section is considered safe.
Having your blood pressure checked with each visit is normal and takes only a minute. Checking at home once a week or so is helpful as well. If you have questions about your home results, consult with your doctor.

Actually, 120/80 is considered average. 140/90 is preeclamptic or and increase of 30 to top num(systolic) or 15 to bottom num (diastolic) of initial pre-pregnancy BP could also be considered preeclampsia. Once you become preeclampsic (hypertensive) you are most likely put on bedrest to avoid eclampsia, which can cause seizures in some cases. Hope this helps.
