I am 15 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I have been on prometrium (200 mg) for about a month and half as well as progesterone injections (half cc per day) for a little less than a month. When we found out I had low progesterone it was a 12. I started taking the pills and it went up to a 17 then dropped to a 14.7, and that is when i started the injections. after taking the injections for two weeks my progesterone level went up to a 39. I continued to take the pills and injections for another two weeks, had my levels checked again to see if it was time to stop the injections and it has dropped to a 13.5. I am very scared. I am 23 yrs old and very healthy. My husband and I concieved on our first attempt to get pregnant. i am afraid I am doing something wrong. has anyone heard of having a progesterone this low this late in pregnancy?

Hi Becky, I'm sorry that you are having to go through all of this at 15 weeks! I have been on prometrium for 7 weeks now and am 12 weeks along. My dr told me to stop at 11 weeks, but the day after I stopped I had some light pink spotting. I thought that I had read on here that most dr's said that it is fine to stop taking the progesterone between 10 and 12 weeks. I have decided to stay for 1 more week. I was under the impression that once the placenta takes over providing nourishment then the low progesterone thing isn't an issue anymore. What has your dr said about you being so far along and still needing progesterone? Does he/she have any explanations? I hope everything works out for you.

I am now 15w2d and have been on oral prometrium since week 5. My dr. has told me to stop at week 16. She said that she wants to go a couple extra weeks just to be safe. I have not had my progesterone monitered since week 8 when my progesterone went from 18 to 72 in a weeks time. I still hate stopping it without a test to check out the levels but my dr. says the same that the placenta takes over at that point. Good luck to you all!

Did he put you on progesterone? When I was pregnant with daughter (who is now 5), I started spotting and they put me on prometrium. At 7 weeks, I really started bleeding, so they doubled the dose. I stayed on it until week 14. I believe that the prometrium and prayer worked.

I too have progesterone problems. I'm 39 and have had three m/c's in the last three years. I found out that I am 3 wks pregnant. My hcg levels are high but my progesterone is low. I have to take 2 suppositories a day. I'm still spotting a brownish red discharge when I wipe. How long can this last? Is the next stage a miscarriage or viable pregnancy? I feel helpless!

Andi and Becky C.- When I went in for my doctor's visit last week my doctor said she keeps all her high risk patients on progesterone until week 16. She said because every woman is different, even when the placenta takes over it is still possible to have fluctuating progesterone levels. She has some patients like you Andi, who bleed when they stop taking it so she keeps them on it until week 36 so I think you may be one of those women who may just need a little extra help throughout your pregnancies. Becky C, I think that you are also gonna need a lot of help during pregnancy but it sounds like your doctor is keeping a close eye on you and as long as that is being done I would rest a__sured that everything will be okay. I had a girlfriend who had really low levels throughout her pregnancy and had her blood checked every week. Her baby came out full term and completely healthy so just hang in their and make sure they check your levels every week. Good luck to both of you!

Quick update on me. I have bad news. My HCG levels are going down which means my pregnancy is going to terminate. I am now weeks, but the fetus looks 6 weeks. They will be doing another u/s on this Thursday. Most likely we will be able to do a D&C this weekend. I am not quite sure how to feel since I have not been through a miscarriage before. I feel sad one minute, the next I feel numb, then angry, then numb, then sad. My husband is having a hard time too. I just don't know what to say to him either. It is all so strange to know that the baby I carry is not surviving. I think the hardest part was seeing the heart beating so strong and knowing it is a matter of time before it stops. I wish you all the best!

I read my blurb and realized I left out the "9"weeks pregnant. Becky- don't worry I am sure that your pregnancy will go great because your HCG levels are indicative of that! Good luck and God bless!

I'm 25 years old and today am exactly 7 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy. My doctor called today with results to my first blood test to say that my progesterone levels were at 13 and she's putting me on supplements. My Hcg levels were good though. I just came back from a second blood test to make sure those numbers are going up. I was wondering how the supplements will affect me at work, I read that some women felt drugged up.

Sandra-I got sick to my stomach when I read your update. I am soo sorry. I have been through two misscarriages and it is so hard to deal with-especially since, like you said, you already saw the heartbeat. Sandra, if you have a choice, I would recommend going through a natural misscarriage. The reason I say this is I have went through it each way and it was twenty times harder on me mentally and physically to have a D&C than to have it happen naturally. Your body doesn't have time to adjust to the drastic and quick hormone change, one minute you are pregnant and the next you are not. Not only was I violentlly ill after my D&C but mentally it was so much harder to deal with. For exactly the same reason, your mind and heart thinks you are still pregnant but your body isn't and for me, it was just so much harder to get over the misscarriage with a D&C. You of course need to do whatever you feel is right for you. I just want you to be prepared for some of these things if this is the way you decide to go. Also, you are going to feel so alone at times and it is so important to have support. Do not feel bad for crying or being depressed or even if you aren't crying and aren't depressed, don't feel bad for that either. Every woman handles this differently. It is just so important to talk to someone about how you feel because it really does help the mental healing and I truly believe if you are mentally healthier, then your body will follow and get better quicker for you and your hubby to try again. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers, Sandra. God bless you and your husband both. Thank you for your words for me. I think it was so nice of you to offer words of encouragement to me when you have this to deal with. Anyways, please keep in touch and let me know, if you decide to have the surgery, how it goes.

I am approaching my 16 week mark this Thursday and I was wondering for the people who made it to this point did your dr.s check your levels before having you quit the meds. I am worried about quitting without knowing for sure that my levels are okay.

I am 7w 4d preganant. Last week I went to the doctor (after several days of light spotting) and they performed some blood tests and an u/s. It turns out I have very low progesterone levels - 5.2. Despite these low levels, my ultrasound last week revealed a healthy pregnancy (good growth rates, normal fetal hearbeat, etc.). Has anyone else had a normal pregnancy with such low progesterone levels? I'm on Prometrium which helps with the spotting. Also, the unusual thing is that I had no difficulty getting pregnant, so it doesn't seem to be that I have characteristically low progesterone levels.

I just want to say thank you so much for everyone's response. my dr. says that some women just have low progesterone and have to be on supplements the entire pregnancy. they tried to take me off once and my progesterone drasticaly dropped, and of course they put me back on them. i had a u/s at 9 wks and at 10wks, and the dr said the baby looked perfect on both u/s. i started spotting occaitionally at about nine weeks and it stopped at 12 weeks. the thing is the spotting had nothing to do with the baby. i had a subchrionic hematoma which has resolved itsellf. i have a dr's appt tomorrow and another u/s on friday. i'll let everyone know how things went as soon as i can. thanks again.

I am about 5 weeks and don't go to the doctor for 3 weeks for my blood work. I did have a miscarriage last June and it broke my heart. So, since I dont' see the doc for 3 more weeks does anyone know of any signs beside the spotting that I should watch for to let me know if I have a low progesterone level. My cousin didn't produce progesterone correctly and wound up having several miscarriages. I don't think I could handle losing another baby right now and this one was an unexpected blessing.

Andi - February 2

Thank you Becky and Becky C for your responses. I guess I am just one of those women, but I would much rather deal with the progesterone than loose my baby! Candice, I have not had any bad side effects from prometrium, but I have read about some women feeling "drugged up" and dizzy. I hope that this is not the case for you. Kay my levels were that low at 5 weeks. And I too, like you, can get pregnant by just breathing! I am now at 12 weeks and all is great. I am still on the prometrium. The baby looks great! Good luck to you. It looks promising! Good luck to you Debbie, let us know how things go.
