Progesterone Level

Hi to everyone. Your stories have been a comfort to me. Mine is similar to many. My LMP started on 1/26. Thursday 2/24 I had a positive home pregnancy test. Friday I went in to have HCG and progesterone taken. I received the results on Saturday; HCG was 600 and progesterone was 16. I had the levels taken again on Monday and HCG was 2100 but progesterone dropped to 11. My regular doctor wasn't in but the nurse staffed it with another doctor who prescribed prometrium (pill) 2xday for a total of 400mg. I have taken 2 doses so far. I went in for levels again today (Wednesday) and they only took HCG not progesterone. I asked could we please take progesterone for my peace of mind and the same nurse said that it would just give a false number since I have already taken the Prometrium. I have had one mc last September so I am as nervous as everyone else. My first u/s is scheduled for March 10th. Has anyone else had a similar experience (with normal HCG but a dropped progesterone level) and had a healthy baby? Again, thank you to all that shared there story. God Bless!

I am also in the same boat! I am 5 weeks pregnant and this is my first pregnancy. I just went to the doctor for my first visit and he saw what seemed to be an empty sac. He told me that we would wait a few more weeks for another ultrasound. Now he called me to tell me my Progesterone is lower than normnal and if I want to protect this pregnancy I must take Prometrium...200 mg a night. I'm 34 and I was told the lower levels could be due to my age and once the placenta kicks in at the 14th month I could go off of it. I am worried that this drug could cause birth defects. Which drug are you taking?

Becky - March 2

Jessica-Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone in your body so that chances of it causing birth defects are very nill. My two sons who are now 6 and 3 were both protected by progesterone pills when in utero and they came out just fine. As a matter of fact without the progesterone I would have misscarried as I have had 2 misscarriages and with these pregnancies I did not take progesterone. Hang in there and good luck and just remember that your Doctor knows best!

I have read all of your stories and I am so glad I found this site. I am wondering though. I am now on progesterone cream. I found out I was pregnant last weekend. I started bleeding, mainly spoting and then stopped after hormones started. anyway I lost my pregnancy symptoms. Will they come back or should I worry. I lost the sore b___bs, a little nausea but not bad, tired sometimes but not that bad either. just curious if it ever happened to someone else and if the symptoms came back or did they miscarry Thanks This site is encouraging. sorry if my post is confusing, but i must confess I am VERY confused myself.

Jessica-to add to my post from yesterday, I am taking prometrium, 200mg once a day. hope this helps!

Jessica - I just wanted to let you know that I started spotting around my 5th week. I went in for an ultrasound and the doctor said that I was so early that we would not be able to see anything. I didnt see anything. Did the doctor mention seeing a yolk sac? You should have been able to see that. I just went to the doctors not too long ago at 8 1/2 weeks and I have a health baby inside of me. I am sure everything is okay. You are in my prayers.

I just found out I was pregnant but was told that my numbers are low and I'll have to wait a week for another test. This has already happened once and I miscarried. Now, I am totally sad and scared again. I never thought to ask for progesterone and why hasn't my doctor prescribed it? Should I ask for it? Thanks.

I found out from my primary doctor on 1/19 that I was 4-5 wks pregnant. I called my OB/GYN and made an appointment. I should also say that this is my first pregnancy. My first appt with my Dr. was Tu and I saw the sono tech. We only saw the sac but nothing else. I was very worried. They asked me to have my labs drawn yesterday to test my levels. They said that my HcG is normal , but I have low progesterone. I also had some brownish spotting last night with cramping. I am worried for serveral reasons. 1st, I thought I was about 10 weeks and the sono showed that I was only 6wks 5days. I'm worried that this means that my baby has poor development or low development. I am also scared to death that I am going to miscarry. I also worried that my low progesterone has caused birth defects in the baby already and that taking progesterone will only make it worse. Does anyone have any advice?

JESSICA S. DID YOUR DOC PUT YOU ON PROGESTERONE! DID HE THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN A HEARTBEAT BY NOW? I AM 8 1/2 WKS AND I HAVE BEEN SPOTTING OFF AND ON SINCE 6 WKS. I HAVE ALREADY HAD THREE ULTRASOUNDS, THE BABY IS OK AND THE HEARTRATE IS GOOD. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SPOTTING IS COMING FROM THE CERVIX. (WHICH IS MORE COMMON THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK) I AM ON PROGESTERONE NOW JUST TO BE SAFE, BUT LIKE YOU I AM ALSO WORRIED. THE SIGNS OF A MISCARRAIGE THOUGH ARE HEAVY BRIGHT RED BLEEDING, MY DOC SAID MORE THAN A PERIOD ESPECIALLY AT 6 WKS OR AFTER. I ALSO THINK ALOT OF TIMES THE CRMPING CAN BE FROM THE MUSCLES BEING STRECHTED. TRY NOT TO WORRY! DID YOU LET THEM KNOW YOU WERE SPOTTING?

Becky - March 4

Hello everyone. Just wanted to update you all on my pregnancy. Well I made it to 12 weeks!! Today I had my 3 mth visit with my Doctor and she said everything looked great! My levels are good and the baby's heartrate was 160 bpm which is very good. All of you who are taking prometrium and had spotting just hang in there. I have done all of that with all my pregnancies and without the prometrium I would have misscarried. Anyways, my doctor wants to keep me on the prometrium(progesterone) for 4 more weeks to give the placenta ample time to take over and insure that the levels are stable. I am soo happy to have gotten this far but of course I am still scared to death. I think I will be this way until the baby is born but I know now that I have made it to the twelve weeks that my chances are great. Anyways, hang in there all of you and I still pray every nite for all of us!

I am at the end of my 14th week of pregnancy and in the beginning of the week, I started spotting and I was having cramps. I went to the doctor and she said my progesterone is low and gave me a prescription. But, I haven't had any bloodwork done since I was 8 weeks and they never said I had low progesterone then. I had an ultrasound done in my 13th week and everything was fine. The heartrate was at 168. I went for another ultrasound this week and the baby is still fine. The heartrate is 157. The doctor hasn't told me anything else about the results of the ultrasound- they did the ultrasound to measure my cervix and placenta. I've called the office and she didn't return my phone call. I'm trying not to worry. I keep telling myself that if it was more than just low progesterone, she would have said something. But, she also has me out of work for at least a week. She wanted to keep me out for 4 weeks, but we're gonna take it one week at at time.I'm not allowed to go up and down stairs alot- just once a day- and I can't do any housework or lifting. Does anyone else have any restrictions?

Dana - March 5

Stephanie I also am in the same boat as you, Friday I went to the doctor and had blood drawn, they said that mine was 14 and they said it wasn't too bad but they were putting me on Prometrium 200MG 1 daily. I have had no spotting or cramping. Has your doc. talked to you about natural progeterone meds? I go back Monday to have a blood draw again and then go back the following day to have u/s and to see how my blood levels are. Hope all goes well for you!

Cindy - March 5

Hi everyone. I am too am glad I found this board. I had UIU done on Feb. 15 and found out Mar. 1 that I am pregnant. My hubby and I have been trying (on and off ) for five years!! I had my first blood tests on Mar.2 and was told all was ok but the progesterone was at 14.1 which they said was lower than they would like. I was put on Prometrium 200mg 1x a day. This terrified me until I found out it seems to be a common problem. I had to have more blood drawn Friday but will not get the results until Monday. I have had no bleeding or spotting of anykind but I do have very sore b___sts and cramping. Is this normal? I will be on nerves end by Monday!

Cindy - March 5

See how nervous I am!!! I can't even get the name of my procedure typed correctly!! It is IUI not UIU. Sorry about that!

Becky - March 5

Cindy-first of all I am sooo happy for you and your husband!!! That is just too awesome. Regarding your progesterone level-I am 12 weeks pregnant and my doctor told me that as long as it doesn't go below 12 then they aren't extremely worried. I am taking progesterone as well and so far it is going good. About your cramping-I have abdominal pain all the time and I had this with my other two, very healthy boys so I am sure that this is just the natural cramping and pain you get when your uterus expands. As far as your other symptoms, you probablly know that sore b___bs are VERY common. As a matter of fact, my doctor told me that the progesterone supplements can increase your pregnancy symptoms. It can also cause abdominal pain as well. Just be thankful that you have these symptoms, that means the hormones are doing what they are supposed to be doing!! Hope this helps!
