I am 8 weeks pregnant and my progesterone level is 15.2. My doctor said as a precaution she wanted to put me on Prometrium. I am so sick with it. I am considering stop taking it.

Hi. I just found this board. I love it. Thanks to you all for sharing. I am 6 weeks and 1 day pregnant and had two other healthy pregnancies already. BUT, this time I have low progesterone. Level 7 at 6 weeks. I was put on prometrium pills 200 mg. 2 1/2 days ago and they make me soooo sick. I can't drive... I tried to drive today and almost fainted and it felt like vertigo like everything was spinning. So scary. I won't try driving on this again. I called my doctor and I get my blood drawn tomorrow and will see where I am. Then they can maybe lower the dosage... I can't function like this. Not to complain... it is all for a great reason. I am up in the air about whether to take the supplements since maybe there is something wrong other than the progesterone level and we'd just be prolonging finding this out... however some stories are so positive that I read here that it gives me hope to just take the pills and hope for the best. I also have my first u/sound on Tuesday so that will help. Good luck to you all! And please keep all stories coming, especially the good ones. : )

Kara & Robin, I, too, am taking 200mg of Prometrium daily and have found that if I take it in the evening with dinner, I don't feel as dizzy or nauseaus. Whatever you do, don't give up the fight. You'll see that the long term benefits far outweigh any temporary side effects.

Are you two sure that the Prometrium is making you sick? Maybe it's just because you are pregnant :)... I developed terrible nausea at 6 weeks, shortly after starting crinone. However, none of my three friends who took Crinone (or Prometrium) had even one moment of morning sickness... It may just be that you have a healthy pregnany!

i have already had an ultrasound and saw the baby and heard the heart beating, it was very strong. i haven't had any cramping or spotting. i already have 2 little girls who i also had to take progesterone for. but then my levels were low. That pill is so hard to take, To put it under your tongue and wait til it dissolves. I can't swallow it because it makes me gag and then i vomit. Please if any of you have any suggestions, please give them to me. My husband wants me to go off the medicine thanks

Kara, etc. I have to take the 200 mg prometrium twice a day so the night one is fine bec. i take it right before going to sleep, but the day one leaves me out of commission, can't drive etc. I have two kids already w/out the need for this and never had morning sickness like this... my doctor said this can happen w/prometrium. Luckily today I got my blood results and I am up to level 19 and was down to level 7 just 3 days ago. Soooo, the rx works. Dr. said I can decrease morning amount to 100 mg. and do the 200 mg at night... phew. I am still dizzy and took it 5 hours ago. Kara - good luck! See if you can decrease the amount in the a.m. you have to take. Or maybe there is another type of pill. Mine is a capsule. Thanks Shelby and Erin etc. for your supportive words!

i wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions. I talked to my doctor today and she said I can stop taking it. I really enjoy this forum. It is good to talk to people in the same boat as I. Good Luck to everyone.

Erin, I suppose that morning sickness could be a contributing factor, but the Prometrium certainly doesn't help matters. I will be 8 weeks tomorrow and have had nausea/vomitting since I was 2 weeks and it only seems to be getting worse. I've tried everything, but nothing seems to help, except the 8mg of Zofran ODT that my doc perscribed. I took Phenegran with my other pregnancies and it seemed to work a lot quicker, but the Zofran doesn't cause drowsiness like the Phenegran does. A friend of mine told me about some kind of sucker they sell at the pharmacy that is supposed to help with nausea and morning sickness. I'm gonna give it a try and will let y'all know if it works.

HAS ANYONE HAD THEIR FIRST U/S SHOW A LITTLE BIT OF A LOW HEARTBEAT and then have it increase to good levels?? I just had my u/s and the baby had a heartbeat and showed to be 6 weeks about what it should be BUT the heartbeat was only 111 when good range is 120-180. Plus my HCG is low, found out from yesterday it is rising, but not the normal amount. It is 14500 when it should be 20000. My progesterone from prometrium is now fine at 19.7 so dr. says wait a week and have another u/s and to ignore the numbers except for the heartbeat and u/s size of baby. Still to take the prometrium though. 50/50 chance this will miscarry or not... I guess what is meant to be will be. I am blessed w/two little boys already so I'll just see what is meant to be. Good luck to all of you.

Stephanie, spotting isn't always necessarily a bad sign. Do you know your hcg level? A rising hcg level is more important in terms of a good pregnancy. I would ask your doctor to put you on a progesterone suppliment and monitor your levels weekly. I am 7 weeks pregnant and was just told I have a low progesterone level as well (17). I am now giving myself progesterone injections every morning and will be tested again on Monday. I have read several times that a low progesterone level is indicative of an impending miscarriage, but I cannot find a source that says how low is too low. I hope things go well for you.

Erin - September 14

My progesterone level at 5 weeks was just under 12. I was alarmed, but my doctor wasn't really. He was amenable to putting me on crinone, which I am now taking, but he thought I would be able to carry the pregnancy w/o it. He has seen women carry to term with prog. levels of 7! Still, I didn't want to take the chance. I'm supposed to stay on it until at least 10 weeks, but I am a little nervous about stopping it so early.

I have been ttc for 3 years. I have PCOS. In Jan. we were about to do invetro when I got pregnant.Unfourtunantley we lost the baby at 12 weeks. Dr said it was just bad luck b/c everythig seemed ok.We got pg again in May but this time MC at 5 weeks due to very low pogestwrone. I am on clomid again and Ithink I am PG again But my Progesteronewas only 8.7 at 7dpo.has anyone carried a pregnacy with progesterone starting out so low,I did start progeserone supplaments8dpo.

Jackie - September 15

Kara, My Dr at UVA A Spiecialist in infertility and MC said he prefers the progesterone suppositories to anything else they are absorbed directly insted of having togo through your system and they don't have nearly as many side affect. I have been on them severlal times and other than being messy I and other friend have had no probles. Ask yoy Doc.

i am 6 weeks pregnant and have been on prometrium since i found out at 4 weeks that I was pregnant. I take it two times a day, i had brownish spotting and did see threadlike things when I wiped, but that has gone away, no more spotting, nothing, so I am thinking that the prometrium is working. I just get scared reading about all of the sidea effects, like cleft pallet, etc. Is is really safe? I am 32 and this is my first baby.

Briana - September 20

I am in the same boat, but I am only 3 weeks along - thanks to insemination - however my progesterone level is at 1.5 and mh HCG is showing that I am only 2 weeks along. I am so scared! I have to wait 2 days before I can see my doctor again. I have heard that progesterone isn't as big a deal as some physicians make it out to be - but then I've heard that everything depends on it.

Shelby - September 20

Sometimes, too much information can be a bad thing. If you look hard enough, you can find dangerous side effects to anything and everything including the food you eat and the air you breath. Let's face it, nothing is safe these days, but its much safer to breath the air than it is not to and its much safer to eat than to starve yourself. This is no exception. Take the progesterone and risk feeling a little nauseaus or don't take it and risk miscarriage. It's that simple! I've never heard of cleft palate being related in anyway to progesterone. This is an inherited birth defect. I'm sure some parents who've taken progesterone have given birth to babies with birth defects, but does that mean it was caused by the progesterone? Probably not. Talk to your physician.
