Subchorionic Hematoma

I have a 11 yr old beautiful daughter. I am 36 now and became pregnant after a gap of 12 years. At 6 weeks I bled a little, but was so horrified that i fainted. The bleeding stopped and changed to brown spotting. I have been spotting off and on since then.I had a U/S at 4 weeks, then at 7 weeks and 11 weeks when the brown blood was slightly more than regular spotting. Both times, the baby was healthy with a good heart beat. In the second time, they found that my placenta was low lying and that i have a sch of 2.5x1cm. my gyne said nothing to worry, i will be ok in a month. I m at 13 weeks now. Still spotting off and on with brown blood, but it is mixed with lot of white mucuos v____al discharge and appear light brown. I have been advised to take life easy. Quite difficult as i m a professional and feel very uneasy in bed rests. I m quite stressed and have the following queries to the group. - Is bed rest absolutely necessary for an sch. Even when on bed rest, i do get up frequently for urinating as i drink lots of water. - I am comfortable lying on my right side or my back. However, everyone suggests for lying on left. Is it fine to chose my position as long as i am comfortable. - i feel h__y and s_xed up all the time. In fact i get severe cramps like the one i get during foreplay. my gyne says its absolutely safe to masturbate to relieve myself. I infact many a times I get auto-orgasms without any masturbation. But if i have orgasms, my spotting changes to watery brown discharge. is anyone else feeling the same. - I avoid physical stress but am under emotional and mental stress as i dont have much support from my partner and my family. I try keeping myself strong by keeping myself busy, at times over streching myself. What do others suggest in such a situation. I would appreciate some good advice from the group.

Hello Tigeramy- I haven't had a major bleed as of yet, just a couple times I had one spot on the t.p. when going pee. I have had very bad cramping with my sch, but that has died down now. I am not on bed rest but I am on pelvic rest (no s_x) and instructed to not lift anything heavier than the milk gallon. I also have to modify my activity. Basically take it easy if I cramp and do not do too much physically... but it's better than bed rest. I am also 13 wks pg and my sch is 2.8 x 1 cm and then I have a little one on the other side of my amniotic sac, but they didn't tell me what sizxe it was (I am guessing it is only a third of the size of the first one)...started with one when I was scanned at 8wks (they scanned me due to my previous pg ending in m/c at 14 1/2 wks) and then at my 10 wk scan it had split into two sch's and got just a tad bigger. Still no bleed though. I get checked by u/s every two weeks until it goes away. I don't have the s_x drive that you appear to have (lucky you!) so I am afraid I cannot help ya with that... right now, I have no desire what so ever for anything s_xual... feel bad for my dh, but I try to help him out other ways now and then. Sorry you are having to be on bed rest... it is not fun! I had to be on bedrest with my first pg as I had an irritable uterus and pre-term labor bad from 28 to 36 weeks... I don't wish that on anyone! Hang in there. Hope it gets better for you soon!

tigeramy - I can relate with what you are experiencing with your s_x drive. I am really bummed because normally mine is pretty low and my husband complains. Now that it is going crazy I can't have s_x at all! It is such a bummer. My stomach cramps when I orgasm but I have not noticed any change in the bleeding from it.

Well, I wish I had a more positive update but things are frustrating right now. I saw a specialist yesterday and had a level II ultrasound. The good news is that the baby is fine. The bad news is that the bleed is continuing to get bigger. It is 8 x 4 cm which the doctor said is pretty large. Part of it is behind the placenta causing a marginal abruption. The placenta is also right up next to my cervix which could prevent me from having a v____al delivery. I was hoping for statistics, guidance, anything from the specialist but she could not tell me a thing. She said there is nothing I can do and they don't know what will happen. I am 20 weeks and have been bleeding on and off since week 12. I guess all I can do is pray that the bleeding stops.

BPACK- oh no... I am so sorry to hear about your bleed getting bigger...and that you are 20 wks along... you are getting into the time frame that is scary for preterm labor/birth due to a sch aren't you? So glad that all is well with your baby though!!!! What are they having you do about the bleed? Are you on strict bedrest? I am worried for you. Please do what you can to rest and let it go away. Keep optomistic because there are alot of women that continue to have their bleed and still have a healthy baby in 9 mo! So I am hopeful for you!!!

oncemore - The specialist told me that the modified bed rest I was doing was a waste of time. I just don't know if I agree. I had to drive 2 hours into the city to see the specialist which turned out to be an all day ordeal. When I got home my bleed picked up significantly. I can't help but think all that activity had a negative impact. I am going to continue with the modified bed rest and hope it is doing some good. To be honest, I don't have a lot of energy anyway because of the blood loss. I will see a new OB on Monday because I switched hospitals to be at one with a NICU unit. It will be interesting to see what he has to say. Hopefully his bedside manner is better than the specialist I saw. She made me feel like she had better things to do than see people like me.

Bpack- I so understand your frustration and nervousness about this. I have talked with two other gals on a m/c board I am on that had sch's and they had alot of bleeding. Their doctors put them on bed rest and one of the gals had the sch with two of her pgs... they both say that they do feel that besrest helps them stop bleeding and heal! I go to a ob clinic where I could see a few diff doctors, and even in the same practice together... they have different opinions as to bed rest or modified bedrest or none... I have also read alot on the same situation online as well... so many doctors and all think differently. I would do what you are doing and even more so right when you are bleeding bad or with it getting so big. Just from other's stories and then with my cramping (not just the little cramping...but BAD) I do beleive that rest helps heal! Take care of yourself and try not to do much of anything until you see the new dr. and see if your bleedind slows down or stops... see what the other doctor says. Good to be through a hospital with a NICU for sure! let us know how the appt goes with the new dr. I think you are wise to rest!

tigeramy - I began seeing a new doctor today and I wanted to share with you what he said about orgasms. When I was put on pelvic rest before I thought it meant no intercourse. My new doctor said it means no orgasms period. He told me that when the uterus contracts from an orgasm, it can squeeze the blood in the clot. In my case the clot is at the edge of the placenta so there is a danger of the blood being squeezed further under the placenta and detaching it. Your clot may be in a different place and therefore it might not be as dangerous for you but I thought I would share the info just in case.

oh bpack, I'm so sorry it's continuing :( My specialist also said that bedrest wouldn't help much, but even so I was on modified bedrest because they said that then you feel that you are doing whatever you can to help. The amount of activity didn't seem to make any difference whatsoever to the bleeding in my case. Maybe it depends on the exact reason for the bleeding, I don't know. Some people bleed but don't have SCHs and perhaps bedrest helps them? I have my fingers crossed for you. ((Hugs)) and stay positive!!

bpack, I meant to add - make sure they keep checking your hemoglobin while you're still bleeding. Even though you're taking iron, if your bleeding is heavy you might need to be taking even more. BTW, are any of you very thirsty? I found that I drank gallons of water, couldn't get enough, when I had my SCH.

oncemore - December 4

JCCF- I drink lots of water every day to begin with so it would be hard for me to tell if I was thirsty or not. I do beleive I noticed I was more thirsty right around the time I found out I was pg and up to about week 7 or 8 but don't see any difference now (at 13w3d). But again... I have always drank alot of water (my drink of choice-lol). Hope all is well with you.

Hi, I have been reading this site for weeks, and it gave me much hope. I am 16 weeks pregnant. At 13w 3d, I experienced a large gush of blood, it was bright red and lasted for about 5 hours. I went to the ER expecting the worst, but they did US, heartbeat and baby were fine. They said I had subchorionic collection 4 cm, and ordered bedrest. The bleeding stopped after 4 days, but started back up as brownish clots this past Friday. I was so afraid the baby had pa__sed in me because my stomach became mushy and not firm like it has been. Today was my appointment with my midwife. After some stretching and moving, she located my baby's heartbeat, still strong, and my uterus size right where it should be. They are ordering some genetic testing due to Down Syndrome in the family and a level 2 US to check on the hematoma. I just want to say thank you to everyone who shares here, this site has been my only sanity. I hope everyone has great pregnancies!! God Bless

I am about 8 1/2 weeks, and last monday i went for an ultrasound. They said the baby was 7mm and the bpm was 103. They said they like to see it over a 100. Then the u/s tech mentioned a hemmorhage, i dont recall her saying a subchoronic? and i of course didnt ask any questions. She didnt seemed concerned about it. On sunday i was laying in bed and a gush of blood came out, it did it a couple times, then stopped, lately i just spot here and there, so i am guessing thats what i have, i dont know how big it is or anything, i go dec 11 for another u/s, so i will be askin questions abou it, i have been trying for a year, and i am 33. i am hoping things go well. i cant even bee excited about the pregnancy because of the spotting. i am scared i will miscarry. i have read some of yalls posts and it has helped me with this!! i will post next week on how it turns out.

Hi everyone. Just thought I would update as to my u/s I had yesterday (I am 13w5days pg today)... my u/s went really well! The u/s tech could not fine my two subchorionic hematomas anywhere! She said, "It looks like they got reabsorbed. She also said she see where they seem to have gotten reabsorbed at, as she pointed at the u/s screen and told me the area was the placenta (big area...I didn't realize how much it was)... but i didn't know what to really look for and just took her word for it! I couldn't see anymore black ma__ses next to my amniotic sac... so that was good enough for me! I just can't believe it!!! I mean, my previous u/s was 2 weeks ago and at that time, the bigger sch had grown, but not much at all... only .2 cm so from 2.6cm to 2.8 cm.... but now they are completely gone!!! I never even had a real "bleed"... I am feeling so lucky and very happy that I can go back to a normal way of looking at this pg! Baby was doing great too! I want to wish all of you fine ladies a happy and healthy pg and hope that your sch's go away very very soon and you can stop worring over it. I know that I feel like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders with my u/s yesterday. I hope the same for all of you!!!

I'm so sorry this is hapening to all of you. I recently had a SCH. My story didn't end so well. I was diagnosed at 12 wks and put myself on strict bedrest for 8 wks. At 28 wks I pa__sed a large clot. This pa__sing caused my cervix to 'funnel' and I was admitted for pre-term labor. I received medicine to stop contractions and steriods for the baby's lungs. At 28wks6days an emergency c section was performed but unfortunately we lost our baby. I had complete placenta abruption (something I had never been made aware was a threat). I've been told an infection that likely resulted from the SCH is the cause for the abruption and the septis I went into after surgery. I know my story is rare. But I wonder if anyone else out ther has a similar story. I dream of becoming preganant again but I'm so scared.
