I Feel Like It S Not Enough

I was an avid exerciser before finding out I am pregnant. I was doing cardio 6 days a week for 60 to 70 min a timwe, usually on level 4 on the elliptical 4 days and the other 2 days I would run for 30 min at 6 mph and go on the elliptical for the rest of the time. Now my dr says I need to keep my heart rate at 120 beats per min. He said I can exercise for the same amount of time, just not as intense. Well, to keep my heart rate at 120, all I can do is walk at a speed of 3.5 on the treadmill on a 1 percent incline. Im used to so much more than this! I found out 5 days ago that I am pregnant, and I started back at the gym on Saturday. I went for 45 min Sat Sun and today and it feels like nothing. I am gaining weight already I can tell bc my pants are tight. This is my 3rd pg. I dont want to gain 62 lbs like I did in my 2nd( I wasnt exercising at all) I want to know if I should be able to continue my heavier workouts in the 2nd trimester. I think I already probably gained 4 pounds just this week since I am so hungry. What should I do to avoid the excess weight gain?

Hi Anna - I am 33 weeks pregnant and have gained 17 pounds. I was ultra fit as well 5'8 and 130 lbs, but this pregnancy had a lot of problems and I couldn't excercise at all the first 5 months. Then when things stabilized, I was too out of shape to resume anywhere near what I was used too... but I did maintain an extremely healthy diet, got rid of all sweets and made sure everything I ate was in moderation and healthy. I feel great, and am on track.to go back to prepregnancy weight. I wish you luck..

Hi Anna, I too am extremely acitve and healthy. I am 9 weeks pregnant and my midwife and doctor have given me the go ahead to train what I was doing before, but like you decrease the intensity. My HR is not usually tracked. I go by the talk test and how I am feeling. My heart rate is 150 at a low training day- but now it is around ( I am guessing 135- 145 max) that I am pregnant. I feel absoloutely fine and feel great afterwards. Maybe your doctor should look into it more. The thing is if you have no complications, are healthy, there is no reason why you should not do what you were previuosly doing before you were pregnant. I cannot Bodybuild like I use to, obviously, but I am focusing on maintenance and health, other than the physical looks. It is so hard to train with less intensity- I actually cannot stand it! I too feel like I should be doing more. But , in a few months- after your baby is born, you can hit the gym agian at full speed. Just be good to yourself and do not push it. You will not get further ahead, only further behind. Cheers

Hi Anna, I'm pretty much in the same situation as you...I used to work out 6 days a week as well: in a week used to run 28 miles, teach 2 powerstep cla__ses, do 90 mins. high intensity spinning or hillclimb, 50-60 mins hillrun or speedwork on the treadmill. In addition, I used to do weights as well on days when I wasn't doing cardio AM and PM. As opposed to that, I am hardly doing anything right now. I am 5 wks pg, and my doctor said that I can continue with my training, just have to cut back a bit and I can't push myself to the limit as I used to. For me this is the hardest part to do. I had to give up powerstep though, I'm not sure about the exact reason, but I think it has to do with all the jumping and turning that's involved...On top of all that, I got a cold at the mo, so I'm resting...Normally I would have worked through this, but I know I have to be extra careful...I don't measure heart rate either, I just go by perceived exhaustion - I think I pretty much know how far I can go...I too keep eating just like I did before, so I ended up with 6 lbs extra in just 5 wks...Kind of scary...I will try to stick to healthy eating, and cut out the junk at least until Xmas... (I must admit, I did have some pg-related pig outs, which I normally wouldn't have done) To answer your question, I think you can increase the intensity of your workouts in your 2nd trimester again -believe me, I can't wait for it, either! Hope this was of help...
