My wife is 5 weeks pregnant and enjoys running two times a week, about 3 miles each time. Is this ok at this point in her pregnancy, and when does it become to much? Thanks.

Its great for her! As long as she doesn't have any pregnancy complications she can continue to run until she gives birth.

I am 6 weeks pregnant and excercise 5 times a week. Jogging isn't really a problem until the baby gets big and your belly expands... then it can be uncomfortable (for some). Later on in her pregnancy she might want to switch to something lower impact like an elipitical machine or a stationary bike.

I exercised 6 days a week, lifted weights and ran ( I was in the Army) while I was pregnant and my midwife said that it was perfectly fine and encourage it. As long as she doesn't overdo it, drinks plenty of fluid and avoids excessive body temperatures she will be fine.

Be careful though because they don't advise the heart rate to go over 140, if she is in shape and can run and keep her heart rate steady it shouldn't hurt. If she is used to running and is in shape.

The "140" reference is outdated and was not backed by any research. Unfortunately, doctors are not exercise physiologists and are not up to date on this issue. I often refer my patients/students/clients to Dr. Clapp III research on pregnant women. Also there was a newer publication from the Obstetrics a__sociation in 1994 indicating that there is no true heart rate to stay below. I think someone else posted the actual quote from them on another post.

How long did you guys actually run for was it only 20 minutes or like a hour ?

I switched to the elliptical machine. I ran 3-4x per week, about 3 miles a stretch, enough to stay in good shape. the lliptical is not as good, but 40 mins will keep the backside toned and not get you too worked up.
