Kegels

I've heard that doing kegels can help to strengthen the perineum and keep it from ripping (as much?) during labor (I will NOT allow an episiotomy). Has anyone found this to be true? I have a hard time remembering to do them, what have you found to work for you? So far, I only remember when I start to boogy to a song I really like, and then I'll do several until I get tired of it. But I know you're supposed to do like, 100 a day, right?

The more the better, I think! I didn't want to be cut either, but due to stress on the baby, the midwife cut me anyway with my 2nd child. With my first the midwife just let me rip. If you have a choice and are going to tear, the cut heals much better in my opinion. I'm doing my kegals this time, though, in hopes of not having to be cut again. ouch!

I feel exactly the same...Petrified of being cut or ripped!!! I do my Kegels everyday - everytime I go to the loo I stop the flow and hold for 5 seconds - I do this about 4 times from start to finish. It's really hard at first but I'm improving each day!!!

Thanks Lisa for the idea! I haven't felt the frequent urination urge quite yet, but I'm sure as that increases the kegels will become more and more effective.

To Lisa - everything I have read says DO NOT do kegels while urinating when you are pregnant. It's ok if you are NOT pregnant. You are giving yourself a very good chance of getting air into the v____a, which is bad, or of giving yourself some sort of urinary infection if you do kegels by stopping your urine flow while pregnant. I have a yoga pregnancy workout dvd which incorporates kegels. I also usually do kegels while watching tv at night. Talk to your doctors about this!

Hi lynnstress, I must thank you for letting me know that I was doing this wrong!!! I had read somewhere that it was a way of finding your muscles and using them correctly but I had no idea that it is not recommended throughout pregnancy. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I sought advice as soon as I read you answer and you are quite right. Thanks again I appreciate it.

That's exactly why this website was created - for us all to share information and whatever else we like! And you are right, that is a good way to figure out which muscles to use for kegels.
