Can swimming laps keep me in shape or help me keep my weight under control if I haven't been previously exercising? Any women who are avid lap swimmers while pregnant?

I was a lap swimmer before, but didn't feel like doing that during the pregnancy. It's a great way to keep in shape during pregnancy, but I have always heard that you shouldn't start doing something you weren't doing before. Aqua aerobics or something may be a little safer if you haven't been previously exercising, but with your doctor's OK, lap swimming would be great.
