The doctors use the term "As early as" 16 weeks, but you're safest at around 19-20 weeks.

i had an ultrasound at 17 1/2 weeks. When the doctor looked to see, she did not see anything. She double checked and again, nothing there. Then she said it was a girl. Any advice?

It's best at 9 months when the baby is born. If doctors don't see anything it means it's a girl.

The heartbeat thing is just a wives tale. It has no more meaning than which way your belly is. (high or low) etc.
I was in labour and had a nurse say "Ohh it's definately a girl" because the heartbeat was fast the whole time I was hooked up on the monitors. I gave birth to a 9lb baby BOY!
Search google. I looked this question up and it says that 100% the dr. (ultrasound tech) can tell by week 16. :) (week 12 is a little early, but if they told you, they must have seen the little pee pee and been SURE. most times they won't say anything if they aren't positive)

I was told if the heartbeat sounds like a chain train its a boy and if sounds like a galloping horse its a girl. Both mine sounded like trains and both were boys. but who knows!!!!!
