I just turned 35 and I have two boys 8yrs and 12 yrs old. I am really wanting to have another in hopes of a girl, but will be happy either way. However, I am so afraid of the risk at this point. My husband is getting ready to turn 40 and had said he didn't want anymore babies, but has changed his mind and we are seriously thinking about trying for our third. I guess I just need to hear from those out there that are 35 and older that have recently had a baby and to know that chances are everything will be okay with another pregnancy.

I sat down with my OB when I was getting married (I am 36) and told her I wanted a baby or two...lol I told her my fears about birth defects and she brought out a statistical list. She had this list because more and more women ...even here in SC...are having babies later in life. Basically she told me the chances of anything I feared were less than 1%. The only thing she pushed on me I thought was the test for the gene for Cystic Fibrosis and an HIV test...well my husband and I both give blood and they keep calling and there is no history of CF on either side. She said when I get my amnio they can test for CF then also. I am just hoping to find out sometime this week that we are expecting a little one. Then we will go from there one day at a time.

Michelle- It is not as grim as the books make it seem. I too was scared about everything a__sociated with being over 35. I got pregnant at 40 and had a healthy son. I had 2 miscarriages after and am pregnant now at age 45. I went for the anmio and even at age 45 the chances for downs and such were less than 3%. That sounds much better than the 1 in 41 that my OB gave me.

Thank you ladies. Tammy you are right, I think I just read too many books. :) As soon as my husband says he is ready, of course we will start trying. I am very excited, yet a little scared. I know that sounds so strange since I already have two boys, but my youngest just turned 8 yrs old. I feel like I am starting over. :) I will be contacting a couple of OB's in our area to set up an appointment to sit down and talk with them as well this week.
Elena, I will be thinking about you and hope that you get the answer you want this week. :)
And Tammy, what can I say, but you are an inspiration! :) Congratulations to you and I wish you both the best with your pregnancies.

Thanks Michelle! I have 11 more weeks to go. I won't lie, I am getting nervous. I guess because of age, I am more aware of the goings on with my body. If I get a pain or the babay does not do alot of moving I get a little stressed.I hope you egt pregnant soon. Your boys will be delighted. There's something about bringing a new baby into a family.

Hi Michelle, I think 35 is a great age to be having a baby. I turned 35 in April and am expecting my third child September 12. I also have two boys, a 5 year old and a 3 year old and according all the ultrasounds this baby is a healthy girl. My husband is 48 with two grown boys and a girl, ages 28, 21, and 17. His oldest son just had a baby girl in February, so that makes me a Grandmother too! Woman are starting familes at a much later age now-a-days. I read one statistic that the number of women having their first child over the age of 30 has increased 97% in the last few years. Good luck.
