Has anyone gotten a high risk for Downs, result from their AFP test? I was told I'm in the high risk category for Downs. I'm going to have a level II u/s and genetic counseling on Monday. So if anyone would be so kind as to let me know about their experience! I would greatly appreciate it. I'm posting here because they say it's more common in women 30 and over but. I'm 28 first pregnancy, 25 weeks along and so worried. It's all I can think about. Thanks!

Raeshawn, look at a couple of posts on this forum that deal with increased risk of Downs. I think there is at least one in the over 35 section and maybe one or two others under a different topic. I had a 1:10 risk of Downs and had 2 level II US and there is absolutely nothing to indicate my baby has Downs (I am 38yo and 28wk) I elected not to do an amnio for personal reasons, but that is the only way to know for certain whether your child has Downs or not. I heard of many "false positive" screenings on this test so don't drive yourself crazy. Good luck to you.

As far as I know, the AFP test has a very high rate of false positives.

Rae, similar story to Steph..I am 42yo and my AFP came back w/ 1:10 risk of Downs. I had level 2 u/s and there were no indications of downs, so i opted not to get the amnio. Wow just realized I could have copied and pasted stephs story! lol Just my age alone put me at 1;44 ratio..so i knew it would be positve. as stated in the other posts, this is simply a screen not a test...and based on factors compiled to get POSSIBLE results. A positive screen is not positve for the condition by any means. I did not get the screen for my previous pregnancy at 38yo..and prob. wouldnt do it if I were under 35 at all...jmo. good luck!

Thanks to all that responded to my post. I have good news. I had my level II u/s today. The Doctor said there were no indications of Downs and everything looked good. He also said he didn't want to perform amnio because of the possibility , of having a premature baby. So I told him that I did not want him to peform the test because of that. He basically lowered my risk level to a 1% chance of the baby having Downs! Big load off my shoulders. Though it's still going to be in the back of my mind. This put my mind at ease. Thanks again!
