hi Laura I advise against this test it has alot of false positives!! I think it causes unneeded worries I say this cause I had this test and it came back as 1/41 for trisomy 18 I was scared beyond belief!! I had a level 2 sono and found out that my baby is perfectly heathy!! I would recomend that you not do this test if you are over 35yrs then you should just go for the level 2 sono cause let me tell you, if you get a positive result then you end up waiting and worring for atleast a week or more...they love to give you these scary results then you just have to wait so long before you can find out for sure...and on the other side of this during my waiting I did tons of research I found that even if you get a good result back and you think you have nothing to worry about well it can be wrong as well....just do some research on this test before having it done......I wished I never would have done it cause I was already going for a level 2 sono...so for me it was just something that worried me and put a lot of stress on me for nothing good luck with whatever you decide....( :

I also refused the blood test (a__suming this is the one they test for spina bifida) because of the great number of false positives. I had a nuchal translucency and blood test done earlier and everything was fine. So I decided to spare the scare! :)

Hi I had the n/t done with blood work and I'm getting my results back Tues. The ultrasound tech said everything looked good so I'm not stressing too much. Good luck!!

I had the triple-screen test combined with a 1st trimester NT scan and it came back borderline positive. I was trying to avoid an amnio because I was afraid of miscarriage (having had 2 already). I truly wish I had just had the amnio because on the level II ultrasound they found a "soft" marker for Trisomy 21, and our risk for Down's was raised to 1 in 8. We had an agonizing week waiting for the amnio results, which came out negative. Also by the time I got my screening results I was 18 weeks pregnant, and had the amnio at 19 weeks, and didn't get the final results until 20 weeks. Now I advise my pregnant friends to opt for a diagnostic test where the results are definitive (e.g. CVS or amnio) instead of screening blood tests with high false-positive rates or ultrasounds that look for "soft" markers.

personally, I am glad I had the quad screen done. I am 36 and did not want to have an amnio. My quad screen results came back "good" I did get a level 2 u/s and fetal scan at 20 weeks and they found a echnogenic foci (spot on the heart) of my baby, which is a "soft" marker for down syndrome. Since the rest of the scan looked good and my quad screen results were good (only 1:4000 chance of ds) I opted not have an amnio done and feel that all will be well. If I had not had the quad screen results already, I would not have felt as secure about this. Unfortunately, there are no easy answers, and each person has her own experience which may make her feel like she opted to do something or not. good luck!
