I am 11 weeks preg and am thinking of having CVS done next week after genetic counseling. I am 39 and wanted to know if anyone else has had this test and if so, are you glad you had it, how uncomfortable is it, etc. Thank you!

crose1214- I've gone through the CVS procedure 3 times and would highly recommend it. I'm 40 now and 33 weeks pregnant with my second. It is really good to know if the baby is chromosonally alright up front. I've had two good pregnancies and one diagnosed with trisomy 13 via CVS. In the pregnancies that there were no chromosonal issues, I didn't needlessly worry and looked forward to delivering. In the case where my baby did have a major issue, it was much better knowing that early on then finding out via amino or scans done much later in the pregnancy.

Hi. I got pregnant in September at 39 and am now 40 and roughly 24 weeks along with my first. I have had two CVS tests...both were normal; however, my first pregnancy ended at 15 weeks, roughly four weeks after my test. I had other issues (ovarian cysts, fibroids, polyp on my cervix), so no one can say for sure what caused my loss. This pregnancy has been perfect so far. Since the test, I have been seeing the doctor who performed the test every two weeks for cervical measurements just in case that was the cause of my loss. The CVS can be performed with a needle through your tummy (just like an amnio) or through your cervix via a catheter...both of mine were through the belly. With CVS, they take a sample of your placenta. With amnio, it's a sample of the fluid. The test was a little uncomfortable, some cramping while the needle is getting the sample, but I was fine driving myself home...I just rested in bed for the remainder of the day and was able to return to work the next day. I had no issues deciding to get the test the first time...I felt that it was something I had to do, given my age, even though I really didn't research it. I was very scared to have the test done the second time given the outcome of my first pregnancy, but I am so glad I decided to have it for this pregnancy as well. I feel less stressed and have no worries about the baby. Best of luck in whatever you decide.
