Does Everyone Do It

I have been reading a lot of posts (maybe not such a good thing) and I wondered if all women over 35 have to have the 2nd level u/s or is that normal for any woman that is pregnant. I try not to worry about every little thing but it is hard sometimes, this is my first pregnancy and I am 37. At 6 weeks I had an u/s and my Dr said everything measures good and everything is like it should be. I heard the heartbeat too! He called it a healthy pregnancy. We have made no struggle getting pregnant, I have been off the pill for 2 years and it just happened. It is still all new to me. He has a 13 year old daughter and he is feeling old right now. He will be 40 this year, I told him men in their 50's are raising newborns. Anyway, I am just a new mom to be with lots of wonders. Thanks for letting me chat...

FrancesM - best wishes with your pg! I will be 37 this summer and my dd will be turning 1 in September, my husband will be 41. I am not sure the differences in all the ultrasounds - we had lost 2 prior to my successful pregnancy so we had all kinds of different ultrasounds, although we did not do any additional tests. Try not to worry - although I know you can't help it. You have a wonderful little one growing in you!

Thanks Tryingx3. I appreciate the well wishes. I am sorry about your prior 2. This is dumb but what is dd? I don't think I am over-worried it is just when I read some of this stuff it makes me think. Maybe I am reading too much! HA Do you think age really makes a difference??

I do believe it is customary for all of us over 35 to have the 2nd level u/s they look for any signs of downs and other birth defects. I am almost 36 and am 12 weeks. DH and I have decided on NO genetic testing as it wouldn't change our mind about terminating we would never do that. I am excited about the u/s in 6-8 weeks as we want to know the s_x of our baby. I have already had 3 and everything is looking great Please don't worry and just think of it as getting a peek at your little one. the pics are treasures! congrats on your pregnancy enjoy it!

Thanks wantanother! I just don't know what to think expect etc...I was in awe of the 6 week u/s. It was an internal one...I was able to see the teeny-tiny baby and the yoke sack and as I said before, hear the heartbeat. She also pointed out my ovaries. It was interesting. We have only told my mom (he let it slip at work yesterday) so it still seems unreal...I guess when I start telling people it will seem more real. I am trying not to be a nervous nelly about it all. Thanks again...

I don't think you're actually REQUIRED to get any tests at all and in fact, many tests are not covered (or are only partially covered) by insurance unless you have a specific risk factor. My doctor described me, at 38, to be EARLY advanced maternal age so I don't think they even suggest extra testing unless you're over 40. We did opt to get the Level II ultrasound and the Nuchal Translucency screening (also an ultrasound combined with a blood test) because I didn't want to have any invasive testing like CVS or amnio, but I'm a worrywort. We really found the ultrasounds to be comforting!

Thanks all. My Dr said he wanted me to have a level 2 u/s. I told my friend about it and she said she has a friend that is 35 and they gave her one. I guess they reccomend it for ladies 35 and over? I guess will follow what the Dr orders...

frances, I had my first DS5 when i was 37! I had a wonderful pregnancy and yes, my "advanced age" was brought up quite often! Just remember they are doctors and have to cover their bases. The level 2 u/s is actually something to really look forward to! You will get a really good look at your baby, all his/her parts, and they will prob be able to tell you the gender if you want. Since majority of babes are just fine, think of it as a way to get to know more about your baby and pregnancy! BTW, I am now 42, and expecting DD in 4 weeks...so you are definitley not too old, and neither is your DH. Just enjoy and feel blessed!

sjm, thanks for the words of wisdom. I go in on Friday for my level 2 with blood work. I am a little nervous! I am sure everything will be ok. Sometimes reading things on here can make one worry. Congrats to you!!! I have been on vacation so I have not been on here in a while. Thanks again.
