Echogenic Focus

Hello everyone, I've been reading all of your posts and would not know what to do if I hadn't found this message board. Your stories are inspiring and have been me feel so much better. Here's my story that's worrying me sick: I went to the doctor at 18 weeks for my level II ultrasound and was told to come back in 3 weeks because it was a little early to see everything, particularly the heart. On Friday, 12/7 I went in for my follow up appointment and the doctor who administered the ultrasound said everything looked "beautiful." He even did a 3D US so I had lovely pictures to take home with me. This past Tuesday after visiting my new OB (switched doctors as my previous one wasn't a good fit - long waits, felt rushed etc.), he called to ask me about the echogenic focus the doctor found at the 18 week US. I told him that I wasn't aware of this and then the doctor proceeded to inform me what this exactly was. He gave me the same explanation as I've been reading online - somewhat common but there is a slight risk for DS. He then said the report from the 22 week US indicated everything was good and there was NO mention of the echogenic focus (even said that it may have disappeared in time for the 22 week US). To be safe, he ordered another Level II at his hospital to check on everything. Sure enough, the echogenic focus was present. The doctor explained to me what it was and indicated she does see them 2-4 times a day and it is common in normal fetuses. But again, there is a slight risk for DS. She did tell me the numbers from my first trimester screening (Nuchal Translucency and blood work) were so low-risk - 1:7261 combined with a negative AFP result, the odds are still in my favor (and I will be 34 when the baby is born). However, she said the odds are now are 1:4000. I know this seems low but I have been a basket case for the last 3 days and nothing seems to provide any reassurance (except this board). My new doctor hasn't called me back (to discuss results) since this test was taken on Thursday. I am going to follow up with him on Monday to discuss further with him my options (the doctor who did the ultrasound on Thursday said they would not recommend an amnio because that risk is much greater). I guess I am just writing to get this off my chest in hopes it will mitigate the constant worry. If anyone has any light to shed on experience with low-risk numbers and the chances of DS with this soft-marker detection, please let me know. Thank you all.

I think the best advice would be to relax and stop worrying needlessly. You are in very good hands and your test have come back normal (with such a low risk factor). Worrying and getting very stressed is not good for your baby. Try to put things in proper perspective and remember the odds are definitely in your favor. Since your ultra sounds came back normal enjoy this time! It goes by fast and you're well on your way! Focus in on the fact that you are having a great prenancy thus far. Congratulations!
