Anyone have any experience with having painful fibroids and trying to get pregnant - I am a month away from being 40 and since coming off birth control have had pain from my fibroids almost all month instead of just at period time - am trying to not take too much for painkillers but some days the pain is just too much - anyone else out there had this experience

I had fibroids and still have one remaining. I had 2 Myomectomies. The fibroid that is remaining was acting as a birth control so my doctor shaved it down in hopes that I would get preg. He stopped shaving because I started bleeding too much... Last sugery was in Oct 2006... I am still not preg so now I am going to a fertility clinic... What did your doctor say about the fibroids? How big are they? Where are they located? Do they need to be removed or can you take Lupron or something to shrink them? The pain had become too much and my periods were to heavy so I when went it, I was scheduled within wks to get them removed... I am not saying that this is whats wrong with you... Just sharing....

Hi there Calgary girl... I too am in Calgary! So, let me tell you what I know about fibroids... at least my fibroids. I have quite a few of them, though the doctor says none of them are big enough to worry about, so that made me feel better. Before I got pregnant, I had awful, awful back pain every month with my period, and it was getting worse and worse as the month progressed. My lower back pain was always the worst at that time of the month, but it could flare up any time really. As for getting pregnant, I never had problems getting pregnant, though from what I've read on fibroids (and it's been a lot) some fibroids can interfere with conception depending on their location. Have you had an ultrasound and found out more about yours? A girl I worked with said she saw Dr Colin Birch about her fibroid problems, though I think the waiting list is 6 months to get into him... though maybe earlier if they can put you on a cancellation list??? My last pregnancy ended in a terrible miscarriage, and I had extreme lower back pain with that pregnancy from day one... this time, I've had hardly any back pain, and I'm now 27 weeks!!! *crosses my fingers* Since I don't know what steps you've taken with your fibroids or the kind they are, location, size, or how many... I'm not sure what to suggest to you other than to read up more about them, though you might have done that to death like I did. Talk to your doctor and see what he/she says... and get the ultrasound if you haven't already. Take care and best wishes on getting pregnant.

Calgary Girl, are you ok?

Thanks for the responses and your kind words I wish you both all the best in your journeys - I am not very far down the road of investigation yet - I have had a couple of ultrasounds so far but I have a retroverted uterus so they have been pretty much useless as they can't see anything during the ultrasound and look at me as if I and my doctor are making things up - she felt a lump 5-10cm last time I had a medical. I did go for a scan (can't remember what type) and that diagnosed a large fibroid on my right side. This is my third month off bc and the pain during my period is completely unbearable now (sharp stomach pains on the right side and also a dull but but very painful back ache) I am actually having lighter bleeding than I did on bc. I am completely useless for at least 2 days per period now which is extremely hard to take given that I am a very active person (mountain bike racer and avid backcountry skier). I had to miss work yesterday as I was in so much pain to move much even though I had a ton of painkillers (way too many) and that can't be a regular thing. Trying not to take ibuprofen but to be quite honest nothing else really works as well. I have scheduled a doctors appt (ironically on my 40th birthday) for early April as I can't live like this let alone imagine the impact it is having on us trying to get pregnant. My doctor is great so hopefully she will refer me to whoever she needs to and I can get this looked at soon. Only good news going on is that I am going on holiday tomorrow down to Utah to go mountain biking so hopefully the pain will have eased up by then and I will be able to get some fresh air and try to forget all this for a week or so.

I am sorry about your pain. I know what you are going through I have been there,,, No medicine worked for me. My pain was like contractions... I only felt better in between the contractions... I am sorry you have to go in on your birthday... Things will work out for you, girl. Just believe and have faith. Enjoy your wknd!!! Have lots of fun!!!! I am going to a fertility clinic now. Doing lots of tests to determine my route... My doctor had to leave a fibroid in during my last Myo because I started to bleed too much. That particular fibroid was acting as a birth control... It was shaved done but I hope its still not acting as a birth control anymore. I go in for another test, tomorrow.
