Has anyone taken a vacation to the topics while their pregnant or just taken a flight. If so how long was the flight and how did they feel on the plane. Any advice? Thanks!

I definitely have experience with this. I conceived in a Mexico and flew very early on in my pregnancy, flew again at 8 weeks and more recently at 33 weeks to Florida from Toronto, Canada both times. Each flight both ways to Florida had connecting flights. The first time I flew when I was only about 1 week dpo..I felt very nauseas on the plane..but I did not know I was pregnant at the time..I think the flight was around 4 hours or so. At 8 weeks again I felt kindof sick on the plane especially with the turbulence. I had pat downs instead of going through the metal detectors. More recently I had to get a letter to state how far along I was in my pregnancy..because certain airlines have regulations regarding pregnant women. I again had a pat down and requested a bulk head seat beforehand..I was only able to get the bulkhead on my return flights. My legs swelled up like tree trunks on the way down and remained that way while I was in the humid weather. When I returned the swelling was still bad but eventually subsided after a couple days back in Toronto. Flying can be completely safe while pregnant but it is always best check with your doctor..because if you are having a complicated pregnancy or if you have had previous miscarriages you may want to rethink putting yourself at any risk whatsover. But if you are having a uncomplicated pregnancy than everything should be fine..just make sure your doctor gives the go ahead and you drink lots of water and get around and move as much as possible to prevent swelling and blod clots while on the plane. I was not as lucky with my 33 week flight due to the swelling i incurred..But a vacation can often do you good..as long as you get health coverage and are not to close to 36 weeks..and you make yourselves familiar with hospitals and do not drink the water in the tropics ..also try to stay out of the heat and direct sun while your there. Best of luck!!

I flew to Hawai'i when I was in week 24 and flew back at the end of my week 25. It was a 5 hour flight each way. The plane trip was not so bad except that I did feel very dehydrated (my mouth, eyes and sinuses got very dry) so I kept drinking water which of course meant I had to get up every hour to go to the bathroom. Unfortunately, it was last minute flight reservation (because the cruiseline I was supposed to go on would not allow me on the cruise ship past week 24!) so I got c___ppy seats- not in an aisle seat so I had to bother whoever was sitting next to me to get up but people were so understanding and kind. My morning sickness ended at week 14 but during the flight I felt just slightly queasy. The only other thing is that my back started to hurt so I made sure to stretch in the aisles during my bathroom breaks. While in Hawaii, I bought some good and fluffy little pillows to pad my hips and back on the flight back home. I was also irritated that I couldn't stretch out my legs unless I elevated them above my husbands lap putting my feet up against the airplane window from my center seat. If I had to do it over again, I would definitely fly 1st cla__s or make sure at least I was in an aisle seat. Also, once you're there, if you're further along in your pregnancy and plan to sunbathe, you'll have a hard time( depending on how big your belly is) getting any sun on your back. At 25 weeks I could not lie on my belly on the lounge chairs so we bought an inflatable raft so I could lie down on that in the pool (my belly would just sink under the pool water) and then I could get sunshine on my back---snorkeling also works. Make sure to bring your health insurance card, call your health plan or insurer to ask if you'll be covered wherever you're going and check with your Dr. My Dr. gave me a copy of my medical record to take with me in case of an emergency. Also, find out where your nearest hospital is when you get there. My vacation was awesome and relaxing, hope yours will be too!

Kristin72 Wow you baby will be well traveled before it ever arrives. It sounds like things went pretty well for you, I'm hoping for the same kind of luck! Have you ever had a problem with your leg swelling before your trips? There are two hospitals on the island and I know a nurse that lives there, I also have her phone number. The doctor will examining be before we go and just in case we have cancellation insurance in the event of a problem. Perl Hawaii would of been wonderfulm, is there anything you would recommend taking on the trip ie food or drinks. It's great to hear you went snorkeling, we love underwater adventure. It's just such an amazing world underwater. Next week I have an appointment with my doctor so I will ask for a copy of my medical records to take with me. Ladies thanks for all the great advice!!!

As far as recommendations for food or drinks. . . .I took a few bottles of water and snack bags with peanuts, crackers & cheesesticks and trail mix for the flight. Basically, I packed protein snacks so I wouldn't get low blood sugar. The island I went to had a big store (Costco) near the airport so we went there first for coldcuts, cheese, and rolls and a case of bottled water to drink during our stay at the resort. I think bottled water is key wherever you decide to go and if possible bring some of the foods you tend to crave in case you don't have quick access to a store once you arrive. I hope you have a nice, safe trip and don't let your belly get too hot for too long!!

Hi Perl, The hotel we are staying at offers bottle water. we are also planning to bring juice boxes. The only thing I'm not looking forward to is if I'm drinking lots of water I know they'll be plenty of mad dashes to the washroom. These days I walk from the downstairs of the house to the upstairs and it's off to the washroom I go. We love snorkeling so keeping the baby at a nice temperture should be easy since once we're there we live in the water. I'm sure you felt so much more relaxed after your trip. This is what I'm hoping for!
