Good morning! I'm still on the trying-to-get pregnant part of the site and just started trying for my 3rd child (I'm 38 next week...ACK!) I had my "pre-pregnancy" check-up and the doctor told me to take 1mcg of folic acid. Normal dosages are 600 to 800 mg so my doctor is having me take 20% more than the "normal" pregnant dose. Anyone else been given this dosage? (I started taking prenatal and folic acid nearly one month ago in preparation for hopeful pregnancy).

Hi Cindy,
I was on 1mg of Folic and got pregnant but unfortunatly miscarried just before my 10th week. I am now on 1mg folic acid again in preperation of conceiving again. I believe that the 600-800 normal dose is a guidline and any extra folic acid yo utake will just be gotten rid of my your body. In the case of folic acid it is better to take more than less. P.S. Are you taking Zinc? I will be 41 next week and I was told last time (and this time) to take zinc as it helps with egg production.

Zinc? No I did not know about that! I'll look into it! Thanks and I wish you the best with your new conception.

You may take more than 800 mg of Folic acid without a problem. I am taking 1,600 ( 2 x 800 per day) on my own. Your body only absorves what it needs and eliminates the rest.
