I'm in the middle of my seventh month and I've been to the hospital twice with terrible pain over the last week. They tested me the first time and couldn't find anything but trace amounts of blood in my urine. The following weekend I was in the hospital again begging for pain medication. The doctor thinks I have kidney stones even though nothing showed up on the ultrasound. I had some contractions the first time to the hospital, but when the pain subsided they stopped. The second time I had a fever, but no contractions. My doctor says if it happens again, I'll have to go to a urologist and perhaps have a shunt (sp?) put in to drain things. Has anyone had any experience with Kidney Stones during their pregnancy? Thanks!

I, too, am in my 7th month, 37 years old, and had two kidney stones about 20 years ago. I just had another, yesterday---presented first with blood in my urine (no pain or other symptoms), was put on Macrobid and told to come back in a week to see the doctor or go to the emergency room if I developed severe pain. I did develop that awful pain I recognized as a stone on the fifth day. By the time I got to the emergency room, the worst pain had pa__sed (just as well since the doctor said there was nothing safe to give me except acetaminophen). I go for a follow-up to my ob/gyn tomorrow. The ultrasound showed no stone, but where there had been one and the damage it had left behind. The ER doctor said I should arrange to see a urologist. My kidney is sore now, and I found the extreme pain more frightening since I was pregnant--I worried about pre-term labor.

My son was born Nov 2004. In August 2004 I had severe pain like I never felt before, thinking it was preterm labor I was taken to the L&D ward via ambulance. Once there they discovered that at 25, with no prior history, I had a kidney stone. They gave me an ultrasound, strong medications, and scared me with scenerios that could happen. Luckily I did pa__s the stone in the hospital (dried up pea-size) and have had no problems since. Today I am going to the DR as my f-u from them to get additional x-rays done post-pregnancy.
Unlike your case they saw mine and I did pa__s it but I have been through the experience and can share with you the procedures, S&S, and post care if you want.
I know how painful the feeling was and pray that yours have been cured by the time this is written.

Did they not put you on medicine for life to control the stones so you don't make then in the first place. My friend in the states is on medicine to cure the stones she had them 15 or 16 years ago with her last pregnancy. Ask your dr.

When I was pregnant my doctor said something about me being on medicine for the rest of my life for the stones, but he never gave me any.

Check into it from your dr's concerning medicine for life. Since my friend has been on medicine she has had no problem since.
