Planning Ahead Before TTC

I'm 36, my DH is 34. I have 4 children from a previous marriage (16, 15, 13 and 10). I've had a Mirena IUD in for 2 years and it's due out in 3. We'd like to try for a child at that point, and I'll be 39 years old. I've had a mid term miscarriage, in the past, and two chemical pregnancies in the last year which of course resulted in miscarriage. We're both non-smokers, don't drink or use drugs. We are out of shape though and although we eat healthy foods we eat too much. We don't exercise as much as we should, really I'd say we're lazy but we have 4 kids, our own business, and a lot of hobbies. Other than taking the time and effort to actually get into shape, and start taking folic acid, what else would you recommend I do to prepare for TTC in 3 years? I know it seems like a long time away but really it isn't, not when talking about life changes. By the time this future baby comes we'll only have one other child at home, unless we end up getting pregnant the first month of trying. Also we may start TTC in two years, depending on our financial and health situation. We are making plans for things we want to do before we have a baby, such as a trip to Greece and buying a house. Just wondering what I should do physically to prepare.

I believe taking vitamins- the both of you on a reg. basis will definitely help prepare your body..... Congratulations on deciding on baby # 5 ! I wish you well.... I am 35 and my husband is 50 we both have kids through previous marriages I have four and he has three..... We wanted at least one together and in Feb. we started trying and I got pregnant right away- I was also taking VITEX which is a natural herb.... I'm approx. 11 weeks and have horrid naseau and suspect twins- will have to wait and see...... Lorie Ann

Thank you, that helps to know and to hear from someone else in a similar position. I guess just regular multi vitamins?

I conceived successfully 2 months post missed miscarriage. I was not doing anything in particular the first time trying to conceive. But the second time I did everything possible to try and prepare. I took prenatal vitamins, quit drinking, quit coffee and no caffeine. Ate very healthy and I began a workout regime. I continued my fitness throught my pregnancy. I did basal monitoring and opk's. I went on a nice relaxing vaction around the time of my ovulation!! Presto I was pregnant at 38 and delivered my baby at 39 in November. My baby is now 4 1/2 months. I wish to try again for my second at the end of the summer and only hope I will have great luck again! Best of luck to you!!

Kristin, thank you for that advice. I'll add that to my list. Plus it would be really nice if we were able to conceive while we're in Greece.
