Prenatal Vitamins

I found the prescription of prenatal vitamins that I had from my pregancy in Jan06 (which resulted in a m/s) and I was wondering, would they still be good? I haven't taken any vitamins yet and I know I need to start immediately and I wasn't sure if I need a prescription for them or can I just buy them over the counter? I feel so out of the loop on the right things to do and my first appt with the nurse isn't until 11/16, I'm surprised they didn't ask me about that when I called to make my appointment?

Sometimes there is a date somewhere on the bottle... I am not sure how long vitamins stay "good" for. You can buy prenatal vitamins OTC, but I do not know how they compare with the prescription variety, as far as proper nutrients. I would think the most important thing to pay attention to is the folic acid content. You might want to call the doctor's office and ask them to call in a script to the pharmacy, which I would think they would be able to do without seeing you, as they are simply prenatal vitamins. Or, you could ask if there is a certain OTC brand the doctor recommends or ask what you should look for to make sure you are getting what you need. Good luck and congrats!

Thanks baby020607, I checked the bottle and it says to use by 02/08/07 so I think they're ok, but I'll call the Dr office tomorrow to make sure!

I use FLINTSTONES...they are cheap and have everything in them, in the right ratio... and some more...plus they are tasty!

Is there the right amount of folic acid in Flintstones?

Yes...FLINTSTONES has 400 mg of folic acid (100%)...but I did forget to mention I take an additional folic acid+ B6 B12 combo that I get from HI HEALTH but I have done that since prior to pregnancy as I need the additional B complex...But yes...if you look...most prenates only have 400 mg folic acid in them or you have have to take 2 or 3 doses a day where Flintstones is a single chewable...

OH and also...too much Vitamin A is very bad for your liver ( I once took some multi's from High Health and had routine labs done...Dr freaked at my liver profile...asked me if I was an alcoholic...I seldom drink) Turned out to be the 10k units vit A in the horse pills.

I use Duet Chewables by StuartNatal (available with a prescription only). They taste decent, and it is much better than swallowing a huge pill to me. My dr said to get one with 1000mcg (1mg) of folic acid, and these have exactly that.

I also take the Flintstones chewables. Doctor told me to switch after the prescription horse pills were making my morning sickness worse. I am now 30w and still taking the Flintstones every morning!
