I am 18w6d pregnant. I had an ultra sound yesterday - everything looked good and the baby is doing great - BUT, my OB's nurse called today and said that my placenta is low and I have to have another ultra sound in 4 weeks.....and that if I have any bleeding or spotting to call them as soon as possible..... Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is my baby in danger?? I am scared.......

A low lying placenta is actually pretty common. I too was told at 19 weeks that my placenta was low lying and at 30 weeks they would do another u/s to check to see if it had "moved" up. At 30 weeks the u/s showed that the placenta had moved and all is well. Approximately 95% of all low lying placentas "move up" and correct themselves on their own. There is nothing you can do except wait and follow the nurses directions that if there is any spotting or bleeding to call ASAP. Chances are that everything will be fine...relax :)

Same as what Betul said - at 16wks mine was low - they put me on "pelvic rest" - which meant no s_x, no heavy lifting (over 15 lbs), no power walking, etc. I actually felt a little achy low too. Our nurse pract_tioner recommended the maternity support belt that it could possibly encourage the placenta to shift. So...ran out and bought one of those...mine had shifted by 20 wks. The belt also made me feel more "protected" too. It is common and if I am not mistaken it can sometimes be up to wk 28 for it to shift if it is going to shift. Placenta previa is the "technical term".

Thanks Betul....Did you have to follow any special instructions like no lifting, no s_x, or anything like that? She didn't say anything other than to call if I had any spotting or bleeding.......

Actually my midwife didn't give me any special directions to follow other than calling if I should start to bleed or spot. I had been on "pelvic rest" my entire first trimester due to "unexplained bleeding" that had stopped by week 8. I don't think hubby could have taken another trimester of pelvic rest..lol. I think every doctor is different is different with their recommendations but what tryingx3 says makes perfect sense and the maternity support belt may be a good suggestion if you are an active person!
