Spotting In 6th Week Any Advice Would Be Appreciated

Well As of Thursday I have began to have some light (brown)spotting and some butterfly type cramps. I am so nervous I will miscarry this baby..I am only in my 6th week. I went in yesterday to the hospital as I had to have a rhogam shot because I am rh negative. They also did another hcg test and my levels were still rising 5200. I know other women go on to have succesful pregnacies that have spotted ..but essentialy it is an indicator of something wrong. I had just had a missed miscarriage at 13 weeks 6 days back in Dec22/05. I also had retained fetal tissue after the fact as I bled for 21 days after surgery and my next period was for 15 days. The doc at the hospital said that I could be still expelling old blood from the previous pregnacy. But somehow I don't think that is the case..but I am no doctor..then again I don't think they know exactly either. He did not feel the ultrasound was necessary because my levels were going up. I still have my prenatal booked for Monday and then a gynecologists app on wed. I guess the only way they can tell if things are still ok is from my first ultrasound. Has anyone else had spotting? Is there and success rate for women to go on to have successful pregnancies when they have spotted? Should I be taking it easy? Or if the miscarriage is going to happen it will regardless of what I do? Any help would be appreciated. XO Kristin

Hi Kristin, I was 6wks pregnant when I started spotting. I went to see my GP the following day,and was told to stay at home and rest. I did not go to work that day and did as was told. The following day I went to have an ultra sound done. The ultra sound result was a failing pregnancy because they could not see any fetus. I even spoke to my sister in law who is a midwife and she when you're having twins sometimes that happens. The same day I had the ultra sound, that same night I started pa__sing more blood and having pain and it went on and I miscarried. An ultra sound will prove what's wrong I think. Good luck to you and take care of yourself.

My spotting has stopped and again the spotting (brown) was Very light...is that a good sign? I took off work yesterday..but I do have to work tonight..do you think I should forgo working tonight and continue to rest..or is it ineveitable if I am going to miscarry? My gut tells me to stay home..but I need the money..and it is only for 5 hours but I work in a bar and it is very smoky?? Dilemas??? I am so nervous about this..Any advice would be much appreciated as I do not know what to do. Thanks for responding homegirl..I just hope I am not miscarrying..hope you are well. XO Kristin

Glad to kow that the spotting has stopped.but even if it's brown, I don't feel good about it anyway. If your gut tells you that you should stay home, then that is what I think you should do.I understand what you're saying, but you health is very important too, although it is only 5 hrs. If it is ok with your boss that you can stay home, then stay home and rest and return to work tomorrow. Have a good day.

Hi Kristen, I hope you are still spot free but as long as it is brown and light and you dont have bad cramping, all could be normal. At exactly 6 weeks I started spotting and it scared me to death. I was sure that I was miscarrying. Never before with any of my previous pregnancies had I spotted at all. At first it was tinged pinkish blood and then quickly changed to brown blood (like at the end of AF) I called my doctor (it was Friday night) and he told me I would have to wait until Monday to come in for an u/s but to spend the weekend in bed and drink a lot of water. Of course, he stated that if a miscarriage was going to happen then nothing could prevent it and if I started bleeding heavier to go the hospital but if the spotting wasnt miscarriage related that the bed rest should help. I went in for an u/s 2 days later, saw the heartbeat, and doctor could find no reason for the spotting. Doctor told me to stay in bed until spotting stopped and then I could resume normal activities after 48 hours of being spot free. Spotting lasted for a week and today I am 13 weeks and heard the baby's heartbeat with the doppler last week. Everything is good. But I did have 2 u/s that week I was spotting to make sure that the pregnancy was a viable one and to check where the bleeding was coming from (never had an answer to that one!). I think a u/s is important to verify a viable pregnancy when spotting and it can also put your mind to great rest! But, to answer your question, yes successful pregnancies are possible even when spotting. I think statistically speaking, 50% of women who spot go on to have healthy successful pregnancies. Yes, brown blood is much better than red blood too. Hope your appointments go well this week. Keep us posted! XO

Thanks Betul, You are a wealth of knowledge. Thank goodness for sites like this where we can share our stories, because truly, the doctors do not tell us much unless it is by ultrasound or a blood test and they still do not have all the answers. Like I said I have the appointment this afternoon. I am happy to hear everything seems to be going well for you and your pregnancy. Have you had any of the prenatal screening tests done? Did they give you a NT reading? Again best of luck to you..will post again soon!! Kristin
