Spotting In First Trimester Need Advice

Hi. I could use the advice of someone ahead of me in their pregnancy. In July '05 I found out I was pregnant, quite a surprise! I was 37 at the time. I have two children, 7 and 5. I went in for my first prenatal appt. at just over 8 weeks. They couldn't find the heartbeat and the fetus was measuring about 6 weeks. To make a long story short, I had a missed abortion type of miscarriage (The fetus had died, but my body did not miscarriage - no spotting, nothing). I took medication the next week to make my uterus contract. The doctor said I should wait at least one cycle and try again, if we wanted. We did, and I got pregnant right away! Today I am 6 weeks 5 days. At 5 weeks 3 days I started spotting and it didn't stop (no cramping). The OBGYN nurse did an ultrasound at 6 weeks 1 day. I was measuring the right size. We saw the heartbeat! She told me the blood was old and to watch out for cramps or heavy bleeding. They started me on Prometrium 100mg 2x/day. (They didn't check to see if my progesterone was low, but said this was a safe precaution.) My Hcg was 33,700 on 6w1d and 42,400 on 6wk 3day. 1st question - Is that good? It went up, but is that enough? I am still spotting (10 days). Seems like every four days it gets slightly heavier, and always in the middle of night or when I wake up(a lot while wiping - never really makes it to my panties)then it slows down again. Has anyone else had a similar experience or know of one? Did it end good or bad? Thanks, JJ edd 7/17/06

well, let me see if i can relate to you. i never had a miscarriage before. i did however, have spotting in the first trimester. usually, after s_x i would spot for a week then it would stop. nothing heavy. somewhat mild cramps. i was never examined for it. but, i heard it was normal by the doctors as long as it is not heavy. i had bleeding in my second trimester. one day of bleeding and the next day of spotting. they(doctors) at the hospital said i had a low-lying placenta. i should get a lot of rest, no s_x and try to relax. i was 26 or 27 weeks. i am now 33 weeks and i will be 34 weeks on tuesday. i know you will be fine. just try to relax and for now do not do too much. i am 39 years old with two children ages 16 and 12.

Hi J.J. - sorry to hear what you are going through, and I'm sorry for your loss. I'm 38 and 24 weeks pregnant. I also have had three miscarriages in the past. With this pregnancy, I was spotting at around 5 weeks which may have been related to s_x (my doctor told me that the cervix gets really sensitive and bleeds easily), then around 15 weeks I started spotting dark brown for a few days which eventually turned bright red with clots (only when wiping). Due to my history, I went straight to the ER. They did an ultrasound and pelvic exam, and everything was absolutely perfect. The RN on duty that night told me that bleeding during pregnancy is very, very common, and one night in the ER they were full of pregnant women who were bleeding! As far as I'm concerned, any bleeding during pregnancy needs to be checked out, but it is comforting to know that it is so common. They could find no cause for mine. As long as you are not soaking a pad every hour, try to relax. As far as your hcg levels, they sound great to me! At nine weeks, mine were only in the 8,500 range (I miscarried that pregnancy). There is a web site that tells what the appropriate hcg levels are at certain stages, but I don't know the web address. How rea__suring that the heartbeat was seen so soon - congratulations! I wish you the absolute best in this pregnancy. Keep us informed, and best of luck to you!!

Hi just want to give you a few words of support..I really hope all goes well for you and this pregnancy sorry for your loss on the earlier one...I too had a mc at the begining of this year it started off as bleeding, but I had a really horrid doctor that did not seem to care what was going on just seemed to push me to a d&c which at the time seemed like the right thing to do as my doctor was telling me all kinds of things like the bleeding was an idicator that my fetus had major problems and would be deformed or something I know now he was full of c___p but it is too late anyways I am now 30wks into a healthy pregnancy new doctor and all is going well so just hang in there girl and everything will be ok good luck to you and baby

I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and had a heavy bleed at week 12 or so. The spotting then lasted about a month after that and eventually stopped. Ultimately, my doctor diagnosed a placental abruption, but at the time the bleed occurred they could not see anything by ultrasound to make this diagnosis. (the abruption resolved itseld) I also had several slight bleeds at weeks 28 and 29 which the doctors determined could be some other minimal abruption. I have not been on the progesterone, so I can't share any experience regarding that, although my sister-in-law took it for both her pregnancies (of gorgeous, brilliant kids, I might add!) and she had no problems whatsoever. (She had miscarried several times prior which was why she was placed on the progesterone). WIth regard to the bleeding, just hang in there. I was obsessed, crazed and worred the whole time it was occuring, and now it looks like everything will be just fine. The baby is weighing right on target, and the docs say everything looks perfect. SO. . .bleeding is so scary though. . .I absolutely hated it and there is nothing to do about it!!! Try to relax, meditate, whatever you do to center yourself, and think positive that the bleeding will stop. I bet it will, either way. . .but the "centering" process might just help you get through it mentally. I worked some for me. good luck and STAY POSITIVE!
