Hi,
I am 39 and pregnant for my 4th child. I am approximately 12 weeks pregnant. I am concerned because I feel like I have had so many ultrasounds. I had my first at 6 weeks 5 days and then I had two on the same day at 7 weeks 5 days because of an error the doctor in one practice made. I switched doctors but the new doctor wanted a sonogram. The first two were pelvic and the third was transva___al, Then I had another transva___al the next week due to the fact I was having some old blood discharge. Then I had a Nucchial Translucency Sonogram at 10 weeks to test for genetic problems, that weekend my husband had a little fender bender with me in the car and they wanted another sonogram at 11 plus weeks and now yesterday when I went in for a check they could not get the heartbeat with the doppler so they had to send me for a sono just days after the one for the accident. Everything has checked out and the sono tech told me she had to have 30 in her pregnancy due to complications but I can't help worrying about having 7 sonograms in my first trimester and then yesterday they were using two dopplers at once trying to get the heartbeat. I hope I am just being paranoid but if anyone out there was in this same boat and things went well that would really be reassuring.

I know it seems like alot. Just be thankful with that with todays technology we are given the chance to see the baby to "make sure everything is ok". All the times you have mentioned have seemed appropriate, and the doctors would not rec them if they were not necessary. I know a girl who had atleast 20 with her pregnancy. What a beautiful boy they had just one month ago. There doesn't seem to be any links between effects on the baby and additional ultrasounds..and if there were the doctors would be on top of that quickly. I just want to wish you all the best with your pregnancy!! Just think some women may only ever have one ultrasound..and they are jealous they don't know what the heck is going on witht he baby..a constant source of worry for them. P.S. I too and 39 and am almost 32 weeks.

There was an article that came out recently in Vanity Fair (I think) and I saw it mentioned on CNN that too many ultrasounds call affect the baby's brain development. However, my ob/gyn mentioned it today at my appt, and she didn't seem concerned at all. 7 doesn't sound like an exorbitant number anyway. From here on out, you will probably only have one or two more. I wouldn't take the doppler as a sign. If the baby is moving, it is hard for them to get a lock on the heartbeat.

Thank you for your answers they are comforting. I did not see anything about brain development so that scares me a bit. I worry a lot as it is but I worry that they were all in the first trimester but it is probably true that it is the trimester you have the most in since you don't have other markers such as fetal movement that you can feel etc.

Hi there, I had one every other week for 36 weeks with 2 of my 3 children because of preeclampsia and there has been no issues because of them so far. the dr that gave them all to me was a fetal medicine specialist and rea__sured me, it wasn't a problem. try not too worry.

nah, don't worry. It's just sound waves, not a whole lot different than sitting in front of the stereo, except the baby can't hear. I had at least a dozen with my daughter, even two level II's, and she's fine (she's now 5). I think they are quite rea__suring, they are non-invasive, cheap, and fun. My sister is an ER MD and when things were slow she's holler at me to come over and do sono just for fun.

I've had one a month with this pregnancy (only have two more to go! yay). My husband told me about the concerns CNN brought up, but I'm not entirely worried. I have a great specialist doctor that really knows what he's doing, is extremely intelligent, and I put my faith in his ability to do his job. I'm just glad that nothing is wrong with my wee one. =)
