When Do Doctors Start The Genetics Testing

I am five weeks pregnant and very worried due to my age. I am 38 and this is my 3rd pregnancy. DH and I want to wait to make sure everything is OK with the baby since we lost the last one at 6 wks. We will be able to hear the heartbeat next week but when will they start the genetics blood tests to make sure everything is OK with the baby? My younger son is 10 yrs. old and I don't know when to tell him we are having a baby because I don't want him to be disappointed if something goes wrong. How long would you wait to tell your child another baby is on the way?

Hi Hoping, I am 37 (soon to be 38 in August) and almost 26 weeks pregnant with my 3rd (two boys 11 and 12). I did not do any of the non-invasive genetic testing, as from my research the results seem to be at best 95% accurate. Being a natural worrier, that 5% was too high for me... (I too lost a baby at 7 weeks years ago). I opted for an amnio at 16 weeks instead. I did the withdrawal of fluid at the hospital and then I went to a private clinic for the screening and got the results in 9 days. They can start the genetic testing at around 12-14 weeks via ultrasound and blood tests. We only told my boys (and family) after we received the results from the amnio. However, a lot of woman opt for the blood screening and are perfectly happy. If the results show an elevated risk you can then decide to do the amnio. I hope all is going well for you; sending lots of happy thoughts your way.
