Hi my wife and i are 35 and just found out we are pregnant by 8 weeks with our first child and pregnancy. Now is it just me or is the support totaly c__p in the Uk? The doctors told us that if our test was positive then thats ok they dont need to do one? We needed reassurance so asked if they would do a more accurate one and after huffing and puffing (and being told to go home and do another to make sure) they agreed, i expected a blood test but they refused and just did a urine test.... Is this normal? If so its distgusting. We also had to wait a week on there result which was positive. My wife is very sick now all day long and extreamly tired, its very unlike her to be like that, she is taking all the folics and vits everyday...she also gets pain in her stomach at times and she cant stand for long. Also is it normal at 8 weeks for the belly and waist to be big already? Sorry but my head is spinning.

I can not speak on th UK but I can speak on here in US and on pregnancy itself. A positive is a positve test. There are several kinds of test. Urine...shows presence of HCG. There are quant_tave and qualitative blood HCGs. Quantative gives a number, if this number increases by doubling every 48-72 hours that is a very good sign. These are normally used in cases of infertility and history of miscarrage, but are not necesarily a norm. As for the sickness and being extremely tired. Perfectly normal at this stage of pregnancy and may get worse before it gets better. The fatugue is overwhelming at times. As for the nausea and the vitamins. The vitamins themselves can cause extreme nausea and help if taken at night. My prenatals were so rough on my system that I switched to a Folic acid with added B6 and B12 and a Childrens Chewable. This helped a lot! ( and the kids chewables are equal to if not greater on the important vitamins such as folic acid and iron!!! and less contipating also. Which brings me to her swollen belly and abdomen. At this stage it is more likely gas and constipation that are causing her bloatimg and discomfort. However with her unable to stand upright the thought of an ectopic pregnancy comes to mind. If they have done a preliminary ultra sound and found a pregnancy in the uterus I would imagine that all is probably well. If no U/S has been done I would suggest getting one form your Dr. or even perhaps finding another physician that may be more in tuned to your needs. You sound as if you will be an excellent father and sound like a good husband by being so involved. Good Luck and hope some of this has helped.

Thanks that helped alot. Its another 4 weeks before we get the first scan so i will just have to wait it out and hope. Changing physicians here is not possible.

Christa pretty much covered everything, but I wanted to chime - if your wife continues to have stomach pains (not caused by indigestion from the vitimins or vomiting), call the doc. Don't wait 4 weeks. Feeling c___ppy and sick is part of morning sickness, but pain is not good. An ectopic pregnancy can be dangerous if it ruptures. Good luck.

I also agree, can you go through an Emergency dept, next time when she gets the pain? that should be checked out as mentioned, etopic pregnancies are very dangerous.

Thanks. The pain seems to have gone for now but if it comes back we will go to the emergancy department.
