Depends on many factors including stage of gestation, the substance, weight of mother, etc. FAS research has shown that babies born to heavy drinking mothers suffered no RAD effects but in other cases RAD babies were born to mothers who drank lightly. In sheep, one bite of yellow star thistle on the 12th day of pregnanycy can cause one-eyed babies. The same substance eated just two days later has no effect of the baby. The important thing to do is to stay away from all substances while preg.

What substance are you talking about? And how far along?

You are implying the substance might be a bad thing such as drugs or alcohol. My answer is ANY amount of a substance puts your baby at risk. WHY would anyone chance it? Using drugs, alcohol, or smoking while pregnant is a very selfish act, and very uncaring of your baby. It's time to put the baby ahead of yourself and think about its health and safety for a few months of your life.

I have only taken 2 tylenol in the last 9 months, and that was for a severe headache that I couldn't get rid of any other way. I won't even drink anything with artificial sweeteners, or eat anything loaded with preservatives. I stopped eating tuna because of a risk of mercury to my baby. Its just that this baby comes first, I'm second. I couldn't even imagine anyone risking their baby's health to get a high or to satisfy a habit.
