Hi ladies, I'm 38 and 14 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My dh and I are trying to decide on the amnio testing. We know termination isn't an option for us so my dh wonders why do the test then. Can anyone give me some insight? Oh, we have no genetic abnormalities in our familes at all. Thanks~!

I think you and your hubby just answered your own question. If termination is out of the question there is NO reason to test. For one it carries a risk, and two, if something comes up that perhaps is a false negative the worry you will experience for the rest of your pregnancy would be awful. You would miss out on the enjoyment of being pregnant. I had an u/s done and the "prognosis" that gave me nightmares for the ENTIRE second half of my pregnancy. It was simply awful. Needless to say we had a beautiful healthy daughter last April. Good luck!

Thanks so much lunanmoo for your input I really appreciate it. It's so hard to know what to do but I feel in my heart our little one is fine. I've got a few more days to think about it but you've helped. Congrats on your daughter. :)

Since termination isn't an option, I wouldn't do the test. Why put yourself through that when you're so far along already? I'm only 27 weeks and we opted not to have the test done because we wouldn't terminate it either & we also have no genetic abnormalities in our family.

I'm going to offer up a different perspective. If you take the amino you find out you're having a child with disabilities, I personally think it is much better to know the challange in advance. That way you have time to research the health issue, identify treatments and come to terms with the baby's condition before birth. On the other hand if the results show no issues, then you can go through the rest of the pregnancy with the knowledge your baby is healthy.

Karyn, thanks for you insight on my situation. I'm still on the fence about this but have given myself until Monday to decide. My dh says he supports whatever decision I make. :)

Hi Ezmee - it is a hard decision... but one thing to consider is that the false positive rate with amnio is very low, so if you did do it, you could feel confident with the results. NT (nuchal translucency) ultrasounds have a very high false positive rate, but amnio is very accurate because they actually map out the baby's chromosomes. Good luck!

Well, ladies thanks so much for all your input it's really helped. I've decided not to go with the amnio. This baby was given to us by God and I feel in my heart my little "Froggy" is healthy. I know God wouldn't give us anything we can't handle we are positive all is well. As I said thanks again for all your support on this. I'm looking forward to a happy rest of my pregnancy.
