I'm a 40 year old in China, 13 weeks pregnant and have a 17 year old daughter. I would like to be sure this is a healthy child but am scared of amniocentesis risks. Going to a Chinese hospital associated with a university - the best OBGYN group in town. I be scared even if the test was in the US. Suggestions?

did you have an integrated screen done? how do the chinese view pregnancy in women over 35? find out if they have level 2, 3, or 4 US. Getting a more detailed US done can at least give you some rea__surance that your child is likely normal.

I agree with docbytch about the detailed US's so they can look for the nuchal thickness and other markers for genetic anomolies. The foci spots on the heart BTW, are supposed to be very mild markers and are often a false marker.I would take into consideration a few things (since there is a risk of miscarriage), like are there any known genetic issues in your family, like Down's or cystic fibrosis or any other ones that you would consider terminating the pregnancy. And that is the bottom line really. Would you definately terminate? If not, why put yourself through the scare of the procedure. I had it done and all went well (it wasn't fun but I knew it wouldn't be)but I had some spotting a couple days later and was very frightened for a while. I've never been to China so I don't know the quality of their health care system but from where I am (and this is just what I would do) I would most likely not have the amnio and try to learn as much as I could from any and all other less invasive tests.

I would skip it, particularly if you're not in Beijing/Shanghai/Hong Kong. I spent a little while in China three years ago, and I know they're trying but they still had a long way to go with the whole clean needle thing. I would say, just get the detailed ultrasound if it's available.
