I just want to say thank you to all of you out there who brought me hope during my pregnancy. Like many of you, my daughter was diagnosed with an echogenic focus at 18 wks. I then had another ultrasound at 34 wks which they said that the spot was gone. But I had spent my entire pregnancy being scared to death of what could be wrong with my baby. Especially when they told me that my baby was breech and when I researched breeched babies online, one of the reasons they gave for a breech baby is DS. Luckily the baby turned on her own and almost a week ago I gave birth to a healthy and normal baby girl. I just want to give some hope to those of you out there who are scared to death about their babies. May you all have healthy babies. God bless.

Hi All. I just wanted to tell you my story. My dr found the white spot at my 18 week scan. Then I went to the specialist and the spot was still there on my baby girl. He told me not to worry and that they are very common. I am 28 and this is my first pregnancy. I did not have an amnio and I also did not have the AFP test. So I was terrifed the rest of my pregnancy. I am happy to say I had a healty baby girl on April 9th. At the hospital my pediatriacian had the child cardiologist do a scan on her heart at the hospital. He just wanted to see if it was still there. It was gone. He said that most all of them disapper by birth. So everyone be positive, I will be thinking of you all!

Hi mawyatt0 and nikipresley,
Thank you for putting your positive posts on this forum. It gives us all hope at the end of the tunnel (well for me anyway). I have 10 weeks to go until I see my little baby. I don't know what I am having - wanted to leave it as a surprise. I'm scheduled for another ultrasound 18/06/07 (which makes me 32.5 weeks) they want to check the babies measurements and also to see if the white spot is still there. I hope it's not there. Anyway, thanks once again for your positive stories. Enjoy your babies as they grow up really fast as everyone keeps telling me. Best wishes to all. LOL

Hi Amyf,
I understand how you feel. I will be 37 years old when my baby is born in early August. I am now currently 30 weeks. They also found a white spot on babies heart at 19.5 week scan which scared me to bits. Everything else appeared to be OK on the scan, but it still changed my DS risk from 1:407 to 1:204-270 for my age. I opted out of the amnio. This is my first baby. Sorry to hear about all of the miscarriages you have had. Let's keep positive and am sure we will have healthy babies soon. Keep in touch. Best wishes to you all out there with this same problem :)

hi everyone, i had an ultrasound at 18 weeks and they found a calcium deposit on my baby boys heart. i cryed all day and the next. got a second ultra sound 2 days later and was told the same thing, a white spot in his heart and of course that it could be a sign of ds. my doctor said he has had many women with this and that he hasnt seen ds in any of them. im so scared, that i havent enjoyed my pregnancy since then..i have two other children 10 and 8, very healthy thank God., i had them when i was in my 20s. now that i am 36 i m thinking i shouldn't have waited this long for my third,. becuz of the risks....this site has given me some peace of mind and i thank you all for writing about your situations. it is so comforting to here of all those ladys that wrote with the news of their healthy deliveries. i hope that i will soon write about my healthy delivery. im bearly 20 weeks but i will write when i deliver, i promise.. i havent had any tests done and wont get any done just the sonos. ill get another sono on 6/14.. ill let you all know how that goes. i pray for all our babys to be blessed with health. carlasez

I got some good news today. My quad test came back normal. It said my chances were 1 in 5000, which my doctor said was as good as it got. She said the numbers did not go any higher than that. So that made me feel better. She said she has seen many cases of the spot on the heart and the baby has been healthy every time when it is the only marker. She said she would not recommend amnio because she felt my chances were great that everything was fine and the amnio is to risky. So I feel much better now and am going to try and relax. I will still be a little worried the whole time but I am 95% better now. Hope everyone is doing well. Also I did not put in my first post but I am 30 and this is my second child. The doctor said based on my age alone my chances were 1 in 670 but with the good blood work it went up to 1 in 5000 of a healthy baby.

Last October I was told that my baby had an echogenic foci spot on her heart. I was 21 weeks pregnant at the time and spent the rest of my pregnancy upset that something would be wrong. I was blessed with a perfectly healthy baby girl on March 20th. I am 33 years old and this was my fourth (and a surprise!)child. My other 3 are 11,13 and 15, so I was worried about being older this time. Please do not spend your pregnancy worried like I did. I look back and can't believe how much time I wasted!

My baby was diagnosed with this spot at my 18 week u/s. My quad screen was 1:980 which b/c of this finding was halved to 1:490. I had a level II u/s and the specialist said she didn't see any other signs of d/s so we declined the amnio. I stressed for my entire pregnancy and the first question I asked the moment she was born was "is she healthy?" and my doctor's response was "of course!" My little girl is now 3 weeks old and in perfect health and no one, not even the pedi, has ever mentioned this spot again. During those stressful, worrisome months this forum was the only thing that kept me from going crazy. I am so glad I am able to post my happy story to give hope to everyone else. Please don't waste so much time worrying like I did, there is no need! Enjoy your pregnancy and forget about that stupid spot!!

Hi So Blessed,
Firstly, congratulations on the arrival of your baby girl. Were you early? How big was your precious bundle? Also so happy to hear the positive feedback. It's so hard to forget about the spot. Not sure whether you have read my earlier posts, but they found a spot on my 20 weeks ultrasound but no another markers/signs for d/s, so I too declined the amnio. The stress and worries have been up and down - I have my bettter days than other days. I am now approaching my 31st week. I have another Ultrasound scheduled for 20.6.07 which will make me around 33 weeks. They want to check on the fetal measurements and also to check the heart/white spot. Did you have further ultrasounds after the 18 week one? Sorry for all the questions, but today is not a good day for me, have been in worry mode today. Hope to hear your answers in due course. Enjoy motherhood with your precious bundle.
Take care and thanks once again for your positive story. x0x0

So Blessed and everyone. Thank you also for the positive input. It really helps!!!
Ottig and everyone- Tomorrow I am 24 wks along. I have an Echo cardiogram at 2pm. I have done the stage 2 ultrasounds but this will be really focusing on the baby's heart alone. So tomorrow I will hopefully know more. I'm praying that the spot is gone but it seems that most of the other people on here had the spot all the way up untill birth. BUT still had healthy babies.
Ottig- stay positive. This site really helps a lot. Look at all the success stories. The baby's nursery is painted and we put border paper up. This week we're putting in the furniture. She's popping all around in my belly. Very active but you can't feel her from the outside yet. Just inside. I'll let you know how tomorrow goes. :)

Hello everyone. I posted earlier about finding the spot on my ultrasound 2 weeks ago. I thought I was doing ok since my bloodwork came back good, I have been trying to stay positive and pray about it, but today I was at the store and seen a child with downs and I almost had an anxiety attack. I almost wished I had the amnio just to let me know for sure but I just cant take the chance of it harming my baby. I think this is going to be a long pregnancy. I am just 18 weeks. I just wanted to vent.

Hi Everyone-
I went for the Echo Cardiogram today. The technician was wonderful and rea__suring. I told her I was concerned that the spot was still there. And it was. She did NOT place any importance on the spot at all. The reason I had this ultrasound is because as a baby, my husband had a small heart defect so they wanted to check the baby. She said that she sees this Echogenic spot all the time and that it probably would be there until birth and the baby would still be healthy. She said that there are no other markers for Downs Syndrome at all and that this spot does NOT mean that there is anything AT ALL wrong with the baby's heart. Sometimes they just appear and are not an inclination that there is a major problem. It's just something they have to consider and as long as there are no other signs, there should be no concerns. After she was finished, she said that there was no reason for me to come back for a follow up because the baby's heart looked perfectly normal. And she didn't see any indication that the baby had a heart defect like my husband did at birth.
I know that as rea__suring as she was, I still wonder if the baby is healthy...why is the spot there at all. What is it? My husband tries to rea__sure me that it's like a radar that sometimes picks up false information or like a reflection. I know you guys obsess like I do no matter what we are told. At the end she showed us a close up of the baby's face. I could see her little nose and her hand and elbow. I'm feeling more positive every day that she is healthy. Sometimes I think technology is still progressing and that maybe there are some pieces of information that we could all do without. Stay positive ladies. I believe we will all be smiling down at our sweet little healthy babies in due time!!!!!!!

Hi Amyf,
Try and stay positive - I know it is hard. Your blood work came back 1:5000 - the odds are definitely in your favour. My odds are 1:204-270 and I've been told to try and stay positive - it is hard but we have to trust that all will go well. Before the white spot was found my odds were 1:420 which was low risk for my age (37 years old) so when I was told 1:204-270 I freaked out. I am trying really hard to stay positive especially after all the happy and positive stories on this forum. I have another scan on 20.6.07 (I will be 33 weeks) - I will let you all know the outcome - hopefully the white spot is gone and I can then try and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy. Take care and keep your chin up - the odds are in your favour. LOL

Ottig-
I can't wait to hear how your ultrasound goes on June 20th. I hope the spot will be gone. Mine wasn't at yesterdays (24 wk) visit. I don't know why but I've started to feel peace about this pregnancy. I think maybe because I feel her moving around now. I know there is life inside of me. I didn't do the amniocentisis eaither. And my blood work came back negative for DS. Just like you. I think that's a good indication of a healthy baby. I think I was at 1/800 for DS. I'm 34 yrs.old.
Amyf- keep your spirits up. I know exactly how you feel. When I first found out about the spot....i cried a lot. I will love the baby no matter what but when I thought that I may have a child with DS, it really scared me. Since then I've learned a lot about this and talked to a lot of people, (doctors included) and this Echogenic spot is so common. The doctor told me that she had been doing this for 25 yrs. and has seen this spot so many times. And only 1 time out of all of her years as a doctor, there was a problem. Just Once! I think that's really rea__suring girls! Just think how we will feel when these babies are born perfect. We are going to wish we had enjoyed our pregnancies and worried less. I just know it!!!!!

Ottig - To answer your questions... No I did not have my baby early, she was actually 8 days late. Yes, I had quite a few u/s after the first one at 18 weeks. I think I had a total of 9. I was measuring very small (4-6 weeks too small) throughout my entire pregnancy so I had growth u/s to make sure she did not have IUGR (intrauterine growth retardation) which freaked me out even more b/c IUGR is common with d/s babies. My baby certainly wasn't small at birth, she was 8lbs, 13oz. I asked at every u/s if the spot was still there and I was told that they will no longer look for it b/c even if they cannot find it it does not change the chances of the baby having d/s. But I finally convinced the tech to look for it during one of the u/s just b/c I needed to know and she said she didn't see it anymore (this was around 30 weeks) but she reminded me that my odds do not change. I know how hard it is not to worry. And honestly if, god forbid, this spot is found in my subsequent pregnancies I will have the amnio. The stress was just too much. But at least try to enjoy your pregnancy, since they found no other markers I'm sure your baby is completely healthy and it's such a waste of time to stress over nothing! Keep us updated, I can't wait to read your happy post saying how healthy your little one is!
