Info For Those Considering Amniocentesis

I am 37 years old and my doctor recommended that I have an amniocentesis. The risk of complications are 1 in 200. I had the procedure at 16 weeks and my membranes ruptured 6 hours later. I was put on bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy. My membranes never resealed. I developed an infection and went into labor at 24 weeks. My daughter was born and only lived for 7 hours. I would still be pregnant if I had chose not to have the procedure. Please consider the seriousness of the complications before having the procedure.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am also 37 and ttc our 4th child. I will not have an amnio. Your story really confirms my fear and looks hard at the pros and cons of that procedure, God Bless you

I am so sorry for you loss! I can't understand why the doctor recommended one. Did he see something on an ultrasound or with your AFP? Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and that I'm sending love and healing your way.....

I'm so sorry that you had such a traumatic and devastating experience as a result of your amnio. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I opted for the first trimester screening (which has no risks to the fetus) and if the results were not good then I might have done the amnio but now that I know your story I'd be more hesitant to even consider it in the future.
