Just 35 And Trying For A Baby

Hey there!
I've just turned 35 and also just started ttc. I know chances of getting pregnant go down at this age, but apart from my age I seem to be perfectly healthy and able to get pregnant.
Anyone out there in a similar situation (old, seemingly healthy and just waiting for the BFP)?

I just turned 35 and and I am 34 weeks pregnant with my first baby, which was a surprise! As long as you know when you ovulate you should get preggo just fine. I had an amnio. I would recommend it because then you don't worry the whole pregnancy. Also, be prepared for a HUGE life change. Everything about pregnancy is, well, "UGH" but a miracle.

Hi Babette: 35, you are still a baby lol! I am 43 and found myself pregnant in January, by accident, but unfortunately miscarried. I am trying again and think I may be pregnant. I will find out on Wednesday when AF hopefully doesn't show up. When I was 34 I ttc for 2nd and on 3rd month it happened. I know so many women in their late 30's and early 40's that are just as fertile, including myself, as they ever were. Don't beleive all the negative stories. I know for a fact it is possible and for me it was no harder than conceiving when I had my daughter in my 20's. My labour was only half as long, and I was in better physical shape too. I was emotionally, financially, and intellectually more ready for a baby at 35 than I was with my first at 25. Are you ttc now? My only advice would be to bbd every other day in your fertile week. Since most of us don't know the exact day we ovulate, and don't need to know, as long as we are having regular s_x during the fertile week, starting around 8 days after cycle starts to about 18 days. Always worked for me. Good luck!

Thanks Suzanne and Karen, for your encouraging words! I do hear a lot of negative stories and comments on my age when the subject of children comes up. Really good to hear some of the other side of the story!
I am ttc to conceive now and did the every-other-day method this cycle. I should be able to test Wednesday this week, a__suming I have a cycle of 30 days which I had before I started the pill. So, Karen, Wednesday is the day for both of us! Will you let me know what happens??
O, and Suzanne, thanks for the tips on the amnio etc. I do plan on doing that. What type of test did you do? I hear there are two different kinds. One where they take fluid and another where a sc___ping of the placenta is taken. How was it, taking that test?

I had an amnio, where they put a needle in your stomach and take out fluid. The other test you can have is called something like Chronic Villi Sample where they go up through your hoo hoo, into your uterus and get samples of the placenta. This can be done earlier than the amnio. When I had the amnio done, it hurt like when you give blood. It hurts once when they go through the skin of your tummy, then again when they go through the uterus. Not so bad. You can opt for a "fish" result, which is the results in a few days instead of 2 weeks. I leaked a little fluid and had some cramps for a few days. When the test comes back, they can tell you if it is a boy or girl, and if it has DS or tri 21 and a couple other bad things. When you go to have the amnio, you get a level 2 sono and that is where they look for things like club foot and cleft palate. I asked for ALL the tests. All were worth it.

I am 35 and 14 weeks pg. I have had 2 previous m/c (not related to age)...and my doc's say YOU ARE NOT OLD! :-) I really like them! We used Ovulation Predictor kit (2 months - 1st time, 5 months - 2nd time, 2 months - 3rd time -time to conceive). At least we were lucky on that part! I am the opposite on the amnio and other tests - I am afraid a false positive would put me over the edge...so nothing extra besides ultrasounds....unless they see something and suggest otherwise. Oh...the other thing we did ttc was I layed with a towel under my bottom for about 20 mins after bd'ing. Good luck!

Thanks, tryingx3. Glad to hear some doctors don't think you're over the hill at 35 yet. I've been lying flat after bd'ing. I think I'll give the towel-thing a try ...
Suzanne, can I ask you a delicate question? Feel free not to answer, please, but what would you have done if a positive for DS had come back?

I just discovered this website and forum. I'm excited that there are other 35 and older out there trying to get pregnant. I am 35 and we just decided to try for a third child. This will really be a shock to our extended families if it happens! We are about to start trying for the first month. It took 12 months to get pregnant the first time and only 2 months to get pregnant the second time. Not quite sure what to expect this time. It's been 2 1/2 years since I was pregnant. Jenny

If the test had come back positive we decided that we would terminate the pregnancy. We talked about it before we got pregnant so we were prepared either way. Our tests came back fine, thank god.

Suzanne, yea, that's what me and my partner have decided on too. I hope I'll never actually be placed in that position though, obviously. It's a difficult issue to think about, let alone discuss. I think I'll leave it at this.
Jdougla__s, how come your extended family's going to be shocked?
My Mom is so happy she's afraid to be happy :-), by the way. If you know what I mean.

Well, everyone else on both sides of the family have only had one or two children. I've heard my own mother on many occasions make comments about other acquaintances who have a third child. She just doesn't understand why someone who already has one boy and one girl would want to "rock the boat" and add a third child! It will be pretty funny to see her reaction if I get pregnant with #3. No one in the family has any idea that we want a third child.

Tryingx3,
I agree with you on the testing - I had two Drs. try and convince me to go for the quad screen, but since this was only based on my maternal age at conception (39), I chose not to do the screens.
But I did have a 12wk and 20 wk ultrasound instead.
(If there would have been reason for concern after the ultrasounds, I may have thought alittle more about it.)
I told my Dr. that after doing some reading on my own, I felt there were way to many "false" positive results returned from those blood screens and I, too, did not want to go through all the invasive procedures (some risky) not too mention all the worry it would cause.
So, for me, ultrasounds were as far as I chose to go. The rest I try to remind myself, is in God's hands.
By the way, I turned 40 in March and am now about 26wks with my 5th child (first for my second husband and I)

Fairfax - wow, 5!!! :-) We just found out it looks like it is going to be a GIRL. :-) I am just at the 15 week mark. We are excited and a bit intimidated - all of our experience is with boys, nephews, cousin, etc... How will we handle the teenage years!! This also means later we will try again for boy to carry on family name. I worry about my age for trying again, will turn 36 this year- but like you have to put it in God's hands, but FIRST get this little girl here, so we can squeeze her and love her and turn our world PINK!!

I used ovulation tests and they worked like a charm. I got pregnant my 4th month trying. I'm 38, healthy, and 14 weeks along right now. Other than a few weeks of morning sickness in the beginning I've been fine. (Okay, I've been a little more grumpy than usual too!) Good luck with your conception. It's been a great adventure so far!

Hi 'tryingx3',
I am glad to hear the news of your baby girl. The dr. told us at my 20 wk scan that he 'suspects' a girl, but did not sound 100% sure : ).
You will have plenty of time to try for your boy... But just remember, this to is in God's hands. ---
I have four girls! - and this will be my fifth !! : ) But I am so use to girls, that I accepted it with a smile.( ofcourse, a boy would have been nice too! : )

just read all your questions and answers, yipeeee women like mo who are over 35 (I'm 36) and trying to get pregnant, and for those of you who are congratulations.....my husband and I have been trting for four months with no luck thus far, so you have all given me hope that I am not too old..In Australia women my age who are pregnant are considered to be having a "gereatric pregnancy", just to make it sound that extra bit special, lol...Good luck to you all Lisa
