Trying: pump at the same time as b___stfeeding or afterwards? Yes, I bought the Lansinoh you recommended a while back, it works well. I've discovered that baby Peter takes his gulps of milk and then when he feels satisfied he partly closes his mouth and switches to the nipple only and that's when it hurts so I have to watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't do that. It's tough to watch in the dark though.

Sann: what's new with you? Are you planning to b___stfeed too or a combo of formula and b___stmilk or formula only?

When I was home and still trying to establish milk supply and start bottle feeding, I would try to pump at the same time (or near) as someone was feeding her. Obviously, if you are pumping to get ready to go out...you would have to time that differently...but I never went anywhere without her that early! ha ha Now that she is at daycare I am pumping 2-3 times a day...every 3 hours or so.

I'm so lost with this b___stfeeding thing and think I need to join a support group or buy some books. Beyond 4 weeks I don't know if I'm supposed to still feed on demand or every 2-3 hours or more or less than that. I'm wondering at what point can I pump enough b___stmilk to fill a bottle with 4 ounces so that he can be satisfied long enough and maybe even sleep about 5 hours at night. I pumped today for 10 minutes after b___stfeeding for 1/2 hour and only got a measly 3/4 ounce. What he had already drank was only enough to keep him satisfied for 1 hour before he wanted more. Then he got 3 ounces of formula.

Hi ladies : ) Just a quick check in .... MERRY CHRISTMAS : )

tryingx3 - December 26

Perl - you are doing fine!!! Pumping doesn't work for everyone! I had a friend who had to supplement with formula while her lo was at daycare because she could never get more than 1 oz. Have you tried pictures of your little one or even the opposite of doing something else - like reading a magazine? Also, I lean forward and let gravity help! I kind of let myself "doze" like I would if it were the middle of the night feeding so I don't think about the progress. I am STILL trying to figure out how to get her to sleep and I let her feed on demand. I read somewhere that putting them on a schedule was denying them of the nurishment they needed so I just let her nurse whenever. Lactation consultant said that feeding on demand was better that they would not be using bf for comfort or just to cuddle until they were 3 months or older and when parents used it for soothing before trying anything else. I do think you can distract them sometimes and extend the time. If it has been 2 hours and the nuzzling begins, don't hold little Peter up against your b___sts, try to walk with him or play with him and get him distracted. I also hear boys are bigger eaters!

Perl - December 28

Trying: thanks for the encouragement and advice. I tried like you said to distract the little guy and it worked. I just realized he's not too young that he can't be distracted. He likes watching me and himself in the mirror while I b__w dry my hair. And he also likes his little jungle gym. I also started taking Fenugreek tea and capsules to increase my milk supply. I'm down from 4 to 2 ounces of formula per day. So it sounds like Katie is still being fed on demand unless you can distract her? **** Sann: how are you feeling? I hope you had a Merry Christmas too. How often are you going to your Dr at this point?

tryingx3 - December 28

Yes, feeding Katie on demand unless I can distract or unless I know I am getting ready to head to church or somewhere - if it close to feeding time, I will offer in hopes of getting through my outing without a feeding. Last night she acted hungry but turned out to be sleepy and went another hour befoer eating...sometimes it is hard to tell! SANN - is the belly getting round? :-)

Hi Perl ... Trying : ) Hope you girls had a great Christmas : ) : ) : ) Perl --- That's so cute, little Peter watching you while you b__w your hair : ) Trying --- Sounds like to me you're doing pretty well with bf'ing : ) Well ... ladies, for past couple of days I was down with a stomach flu but I feeling ok today. On top of that, our internet excess was disrupted due to the earth quake in Taiwan that affect some parts SE Asia. To add on to that, we had practically non-stop rain for past few weeks and some parts of SE Asia are now covered by floods.... but luckly we're not being affected to badly here just some low lying area are flooded up to waist high. Re : my updates, I'm seeing the doc every 4 weeks. My next appt is on the 3rd Jan 07 (just after the New Year) cos my doc is on vacation for Christmas holidays. Yes : ) belly is definitely getting rounder everyday : ) : ) : ) But I think I'm carrying pretty small though, I'm still not putting on much weight as compared to my girlfriends. One thing's for sure ... my baby girl is definitely an active one : ) She's kicking/moving every alot more these days/nights and she'll let me know when I'm in a position that she's not comfortable in (especially bed time) : ) : ) : ) TTY

SANN - getting so excited for you! What is your due date again? Perl and I aren't ignoring you! If you miss us - you can probably find us curled up wishing we were asleep! ha ha Mommyhood is hard work and WORTH every minute of it! :-)

Perl - January 2

Sann: earthquakes and floods--yikes! I'm glad you're okay other than no computer access for a while. How exciting that you're feeling the baby moving and kicking now! I'm sure you're loving those moments. The sweetest part of my pregnancy was feeling those baby movements even the ones that sort of hurt towards the end of the 9 months. : ) Good luck at your appointment tomorrow!***Trying: the wishing I could sleep part is so true!! Today I slept from 5 am to noon--oops ha ha. Little Pete woke me up and wanted to sit up and gaze around the room at the furniture and walls from 1 to 4 am. He fusses until I sit him up then he quiets down and just gazes for about 1/2 hour or so and uses his voice to make cute little sounds--his way of talking. It's so adorable but I wish he could do this during daylight instead of 1-4 am. Of course with interruptions every 2 hours to feed Pete, fall asleep, scoop him up roll over from side to side and then feed, sleep, roll over again and again.

tryingx3 - January 3

Perl - are you co-sleeping?

Perl - January 5

Yes, I'm co-sleeping. Do you think that makes things worse? Today baby Pete has been wanting to nurse for 1 hour at a time. He gets really insulted if I pull him away from the b___st. I love having him in my arms but I'm getting sore and tired. I wish this could be easier.***Sann: how was your appointment?

tryingx3 - January 5

Perl - I have no idea about co-sleeping was just curious. I was too scared to put Katie in bed with us when she was new born. She has been in bed with me some since I went back to work...like from 4-6 in the morning...but only with me alone in the bed...not my husband. I have gotten some rest that way but am super careful with the covers and stuff. I would imagine little Pete is going through a growth spurt. How many weeks is he now? Katie was a very active feeder at almost all of the major "growth spurt times". Her last spurt was at 13 wks...every 1.5 hours.

Perl - January 5

Trying: yeah I was scared of the co-sleeping too especially because my dh is a deep sleeper and would likely roll over onto baby but I put a wedge in the middle of the bed and push my dh whenever I see him crossing the line. : ) Also the little guy is pretty skilled at scooting over to be right up against his food source. After I nurse I move a few inches away from him and when I wake he has moved towards me. I've had a couple of scares but at this point I don't sleep much anyway so I'm good about checking on him. Sooner or later I'll transition him to the cradle I keep by my side of the bed. Anyway, Pete is 8 weeks old now and is getting heavier and chunkier so I believe you're right about growth spurt. So I have to look forward to another spurt at 13 weeks, thanks for the warning. I'm still only pumping 1.5 to 2 ounces per b___st in a 10 minute pumping session. Feels like my supply isn't even increasing yet along with his appet_te--did you feel this way too Trying??? ****Sann: are you out there? How did it go? I hope we aren't boring you with baby feeding and sleeping stories, etc. Hopefully all of this gives you a preview of what you have to look forward to. : )
