I don't know the statistics but I'd like to know too. Sorry that you don't have a very tactful Dr. Why would he/she do that? Don't let anyone steal your joy. Do the tests to check for downs if you feel the need but otherwise, go on being happy!

Hi, for some reason i think this issue of having babies after certain age is a risky thing, is just a scam, yes sure i know women when they get older it wil be harder to pregnents, since the reproduction system is working a little diffrent, but once you are pregnant, you chances of DS exctly like any woman in her 20s. the funny part is , so far all the people with DS i so or knew, there moms are not over 40, and not even over 35. and at the end of the day, just leave it in God's hands. what meant to be meant to be . good luck

Your chances of having a child with Down Syndrome DO increase as you get older. It's a medical fact. However, just because you're 43 doesn't mean you will have a child with DS. I spoke with a friend of mine who does ultrasounds and who has for years. She said that at the age of 45 (I'm 38 and pregnant with my first child) you have a 20% chance of having a child with DS. However, that means you have an 80% of NOT having one. I've said it before on this board on other threads, but even if it did occur, children with DS are awesome! I've been teaching special ed. for 16 years and, if I HAD to have a child with a disability, I'd choose one with DS. Remember, your chances are higher that your child will be just as healthy as you hope!

Hi there, I myself am trying to decide on #4 and have wondered the same question. I am 36 yrs old. I found a site www.gynob.com that has the numbers on that and my dr confirmed them. For 43 it says 1/53. Check out the site, don't worry, a lot of women have perfectly healthy babies in their 40's. there are lots of very positive stories on this board. Good luck.
