Has anyone became pregnant after age 35 and had uterine fibroids as well? What were your experiences?

Hi Kecia, you are going to get many answers on this one. I will tell you my story (the try to keep it short version) and you can search these boards and find more. I had heavy periods for years (got worse from 33 to 37 or so) the whole time not using birth control cuz we'd decided to have a baby. Found out I was very anemic from those periods and that I had fibroids that were making them so heavy. I had intraveneous iron treatments, went in for a myomectomy (sugical removal of the fibroids) and didn't think to use birth control the next month and became pregnant that fast. I grew a couple of new fibroids while pregnant but they didn't cause me any problems. Since I'd just had abdominal surgery though, my doc insisted on a C-section because he didn't want me to labor. I am now almost 42 and my son just turned 2. Some women don't even know they have fibroids, get pregnant and do just fine. Sometimes they can complicate a pregnancy or even cause a miscarriage but all this depends on so many things, like where they are in your uterus(in the wall-AKA-intramural or hanging on the outside or inside) Mine were intramural and so they distorted the inside of my uterus, preventing me from getting PG until they were removed. It was weird though that I had them removed for health reasons and then wound up PG almost immediately. I hope this isn't too long, I figured I'd just share what I's learned from experience. Hope it isn't TNMIHi Kecia, you are going to get many answers on this one. I will tell you my story (short version) and you can search these boards and find more. Well I don't how my situation compares but I had tests and ultrasounds done several years ago after I complained of painful s_x and I was told that I had an ovarian cyst (not a big deal) and fibroids. The doctor told me not to be too concerned because the majority of the fibroids were on the outer lining of the uterus not the inner so I guess that makes a difference. However, I did have a few fibroids on the inner lining as well. Subsequently, I became pregnant in 2005 and had a miscarriage. I got pregnant again and had my first baby in 2006 at age 38. Now I'm pregnant with baby #2. Has your doctor told you that this could cause problems for you in becoming pregnant?

Thanks Bridget and Perl. My fibroids were discovered in 2005. I chose a wait and see approach. Since my husband and I had not decided if we were going to get pregnant I didn't feel a need to have any removal procedures, my doc agreed. However I did have an ultrasound but I can't remember where they were. Anyway I'm freaking a little. I have 3 sons 16, 14, & 12. My husband is 47 and I will be 37 in Nov. and for the life of me I can't find a 100% positive report that quote favorable stats for me or my wonderfully older husband and his sperm LOL. I have a doc appt in a few weeks and I'll be armed with plenty of questions. Thanks again for sharing.

I apparently have fibroids. Not sure of all the details, but have just had my 4th baby. I am 38 and will be 39 next month. I had all c-sections but not because of fibroids and did fine. Good luck.

Hi Kecia, I just wanted to add that my husband is "wonderfully older" too--LOL! So we have that in common too. Our genetic counselor told me that his age put our baby at higher risk for abnormalities but on the other hand we're born with our eggs and men produce new sperm every couple days. Anyway, just thought I should add that for what it's worth.

I got pregnant at 33 (pretty close to 35) and found out I had 4 fibroids, with the largest being 4cm. I was pretty worried as I had an early m/c 3 months prior, but the doctor said it probably didn't cause the m/c and I now have a healthy baby girl who is 10 months old. I had no problems whatsoever due to the fibroids. FYI, they are located on the outer wall. Best of luck. :)

Hi all, Had a prepreg consult today and my gyn was very optimistic about the fibroids. Based on my last year's ultrasound, they are located in the wall of my uterus. I'm scheduled to have a "fibroid mapping" as well as an IUD discovery done on Wed. She wants to see their sizes, location, growth etc. I also have an embedded IUD but no worries there, that task is simple as she has explained. She concerned about removing the IUD before she determines how the fibroids might impact the preg. She feels my age is fine and we really shouldn't have any trouble getting preg, BUT those darn fibroids are quite pesky. Anyway that's my update. Thanks jessica72 for your response.

Hi Kecia, fibroids run in my family, so I wasn't suprised when I was diagnosed at 33. I had one in the wall at 7.5 cm. I saw three doctors and got three different levels of panic. You can search the other boards for the whole story. Basically my current ob told me since it is in the wall and not inside the uterus, it probably wouldn't cause any problems. So when we were ready, we could start ttc. If it didn't work after 6 months, we should go back. A year later we started ttc. It took 7 months, but it worked! (After reading all these postings, 7 months is not too bad) I'm 9w now (and a few weeks short of 35). I've been spotting (brown) on and off for 4 weeks. The ER doc said the spotting was most likely because of the fibroid, which at 6w had grown to 11 cm. The radiologist said I shouldn't be surprised if I have to have a c-section because the fibroid is so low. Good luck ttc! Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks a bunch for the response. I've just gone to another doc to get a 2nd pinion sort a speak bc my current gyn was speaking of a possible myomectomy. The spec gyn does think the fibroids are that big of a deal and has sort of advised my hubby and I along those lines. In fact on May 9th he's going to remove my IUD and we will see what happens. But thanks for sharing and giving hope.

Hi Kecia, I had a myomectomy at the age of 30 and got pregnant with my son at the age of 35. I still suffer from fibroids and they are on outside the one i have now is fairly large and i may be pregnant at the age of 49. I am going to the doc today the fibroids are pesty things... my cycle is so irregular that i have no earthly idea when i ovulate.... i may go 3 months with no cycle and then have a real heavy one.... so hang in there.... everything will be fine.....

Congratulations Kecia!!! Please keep in touch and let us know if you have any questions. My LO is 3 weeks old today. He's doing great. I had a rough pregnancy with lots of pain, then he had lots of trouble coming out (even with a c-section) so he was really bruised. But he's doing great now! Even with all of that, my OB still thinks I should keep the fibroid until we're done having kids. I'm not sure I like that idea. Stick baby dust and a happy healthy nine months to you!
