Progesterone Pills

I have been taking prometrium during my first trimester. I will be 12 weks this Thursday and assume that the Dr. will have me stop taking them. Because of my history of miscarriage, I'm so nervous that the only thing that is keeping this pregnancy thriving is the extra progesterone. I have had 2 US and they were find. Heartbeat was good and everything else looks "normal". Am I crazy for thinking this way? Has anyone had any reactions/problems once they went off the progesterone?

I was on progesterone pills and suppositories until about week 10ish. I was also afraid to stop taking it although I had never miscarried or anything like that. Once they saw via ultrasound that the placenta had taken over, they told me to stop taking it. I shared my concerns, but they said I have absolutley nothing to worry about. I think the placenta takes over at 10 weeks or so, so if you are 12 weeks already you should have nothing to worry about. Ask about weaning yourself off of the progesterone. They told me that if I was more comfortable doing it that way to go ahead rather than stopping it so abrubtly. It can't hurt to ask. Good luck!

I agree w/Tracy, the progesterone is only supplemented until the placenta takes over at 12(10) weeks. I am also very paranoid about my prog. level due to 2 m/c in the past. But my doc a__sured me that by now Im fine. I didnt supplement this time, but did get a few prog shots to boost it up. I do not need those anymore, thank goodness. GOOD LUCK!

Runnermom, I felt the same was as you. I'm pretty sure the main reason I was finally able to get pg after 12 months was the progesterone so I was really nervous about going off of it. (I had also had a m/c at 8 weeks.) But like Tracy and Suze's doctors, mine said that the placenta does take over by the end of the 1st trimester. I think I stayed on it until about week 12 or 13 and then gradually dropped the dosage down over a few days. Didn't notice any effects from going off of it. I'm 20w2d now and doing well. Best of luck to you.

I was wondering what everyone's progesterone levels were when they went on the supplemental prog, and at what week did you start it? I am week 8, and at 9 ng(?), and have been apparently since week 6 (they forgot to follow up with the lab results that never were sent back!). So now at week 8, just 2 days after the US showed a heartbeat, I have lost my nipple tenderness, and am worried it is the beginning of a miscarriage (also had 2 between my 2nd and 3rd baby). One OB in the practice said prog was not necessary now that I am week 8, but I was on it for all my other pregnancies until 12 weeks. I started the prog the night of my ultrasound, but now am afraid the 2 weeks of the lost lab result may have doomed this pregnancy already. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Dimare, I went on the supplements because I had been through fertility treatments, so it was part of the protocol. My progesterone was actually really super high at 144, but they supplement everyone. I don't know enough to say what should be done at 8 weeks. 9ng is also confusing to me. Hopefully someone can write in and offer more clarity. Hang in there and try to remain optimistic. You have beautiful children to prove that you can overcome anything thrown your way. Stay strong.

Dimare - my progesterone was 8.8 (not sure what unit of measurement) at the 21-day test. I went on supplements starting at ovulation on the cycle I got pg and stayed on them until week 12 or 13. At about week 5 in the pregnancy, my progesterone was tested at about 32.9. I don't know what normal is for week 8, but I'm sending you good wishes and positive thoughts... the fact that you got a hb is a good sign so stick with the progesterone and hopefully it will all work out ok.
