Risks With Older Father

Hi everyone! I'm pregnant with baby #2, I'm 29. My significant other is 47, almost 48. I know that the risks increase with the age of the mother. Is this true for the age of the father as well?

from what I have read and heard...NO

I remember hearing a couple years ago that the age of the father mattered also for Downs. Since then I have not heard much about it, except that the father's age is not the same level of risk at all. The age issue has more to do with women because their eggs are with them their whole lives, whereas men constantly produce new sperm. Apologies if you knew this already.

My husband was 56 with our first baby, 57 with the second. They are healthy. I also heard that the risk on the father side is not as significant. (btw, I was 39 and 41 - so we beat you a lot in the combined age :-)

Bill.....no, I didn't know that. Thanks for the information. And 'in the woods', yes, you've beat us by a long run for the combined age! :) Good for you! My sweetie is very active and healthy, as am I...I"m certain everything will be just fine. Thanks guys!!!

hi, if i remember correctlly i read that only the maternal age mattered for Down but the fathers age had a small impact in a list of other chromo. issues like Huntington's fragile X and a few others. I saw this info on a google search.
