Ultrasound Pregnancy Dating

Anyone know why ultrasound dating is different from lmp dating? Do they actually give you the gestational age of the growing baby. I was 6 weeks 2 days from lmp whne I went for my ultrasound. The tech dated the pregnancy at 5 weeks 3 days - should I be concerned? Are things not developing properly? This is a long waiting period for me. I had a previous miscarriage and last time I had ectopic with ruptured tube. I am so anxious for this one to be ok. It has been a week since my ultrasound and no word from my Dr? I do know that this one is not ectopic, which I am thankful for, but now I can't wait for everything to be ok. The dating thing really threw me off and I am worried.

lmp is a guess, because normally we really dont know EXACTLY when we concieve, but do know our periods. An early pregnancy moves in a very predictable pattern, so the u/s date can be a closer guess. Also u/s dates can be 5 days off - they are just a closer guess. That helps alot later down the path of pregnancy, especially in some of the tests for downs, etc. The important thing now is from this point, using this new date, the measurements should always go up. I wish you the best of luck in this pregnancy...

LMP dates from your last period, which may be 14 days prior to conception but isn't necessarily always 14 days prior to conception. With ultrasound dating they measure the conceptus or fetus or examine appearance of distingushing characteristics and can pinpoint the date of conception.
