Hi Everyone...I saw my baby yesterday with the ultra-sound at the hospital in 3-D, which surprised me. I didn't expect to see it in 3D and didn't see it that way with my first baby. Anyone else have this and find it very weird to look at?? I know that may sound terrible and I got a couple of regular ultra-sound pics too, but the 3D ones look so strange it's almost a little scary to look at! It's freaky!

lol!! My hubby would agree with you. We are thinking about getting one done too and he says he thinks it is a little creepy getting to look at your baby before it is born!! I think it would be great, but I can totally understand your thoughts on it too!! lol! So amazing what technology can do now isn't it!!

Yeah, but if you've never seen it, it's not just that it's creepy to see the baby before it's born in 3D, but seeing it in 3D at that stage, there's the weirdest bumps and everything all over it, it looks like there's serious abnormalities. Everything with the test looked great and the doctor said, 'that's what babies look like at this stage'. It's so weird. I wouldn't recommend seeing it unless they just put it right there for you to look at.

3D/4D ultrasounds will only focus in on certain parts of the baby and can make other parts look like they're missing or deformed. For example, I have one picture where it looks like my son has a giant dent in the side of his head, but in the next picture you can see his ear, forhead, and even some hair. In some pictures it looks like his arm stops at his wrist and he has no hands....yet in the next picture you can clearly see his entire arm, hand, and five fingers. You just have to know how to look at them and focus on what the picture focused on and they can be really cool. I have some awesome pictures of my little guy's face, I just crop them so the 'wierd' parts aren't shown.

With my first we had one done, and it was great. This pregnancy I have an appointment for one at 28 weeks. I can't wait.

If you think that was freak then I would stear clear of the 4d ultrasounds - You can actually see your baby in 4d almost as of you were looking at him normally - That is scary. Dh and I are still thinking about whether to get it done - It costs about £200.00 here - The hospital only does the regular 3d scan.

kay- that's a good idea. I know in one I have, the face is I guess what looks the most normal. A little rea__suring though to hear yours looked funky too. Didn't realize it's focused in on one point like that. I still sort of like the black and white profile old school pics better though :):)

yes, kolleen- trippy is the word!! Don't stress it. Regular pics are cool enough I think. i thought it was a very expensive thing too and I used a different hospital last year for my son, and it was an excellent hospital and I remember asking them if they had it and they said no. This was an older looking office of an also excellent hospital in our area and it was just a b___ton he pushed on the machine without my even asking him and it gave the 3D/4D picture. I was surprised.

So they're different?? 3D and 4D I guess obviously so. I didn't ask for it and got it so it was offered, I didn't have to pay for it though my insurance covers the tests ($40 copay). Guess it's different in England than New Jersey :)
I believe mine was the 3D one though, not the 4D. Crazy!

I think I heard that you are recommended to do it after a certain point (I think after 24 or 28 weeks?) because the baby looks so odd before that (not enough fat on the body). I also read somewhere on here not long ago that the difference basically between 3D and 4D is that 4D shows the baby in motion during real time whereas the 3D is more of snapshots/stills.

that would make sense to get it later when the baby is more developed. Hopefully I can see it again in a more normal sense!

I got my 3D ultrasound dont the other day at 23 weeks and I thought they were SO amazing. The only time she looked weird is when she moved really fast and even then when she did she just looked more like a 2D ultrasound, kind of skeletal. But I really really enjoyed it, i thought she looked perfect lol

The time must have something to do with it because mine was only at 11 weeks. All I know is the doctor said everything looked perfect so that was good enough. Hard for me to really make anything out too much!

Sorry to pop in on u girls, but I have a friend paying for one for me as a birthday gift. I really want to find out the gender of the baby... can anyone recommend a good stage for that and to get a good look at baby? (my other children are older, i'm starting over) With my other kids, they only offered the good ol' black and white... I'm excited to have one done, but will wait until the right time. I'm 14 weeks and 3 days as of now... thanks for any replys, and again sorry for interupting!

Renae, they recommend doing it between 26-32 weeks to get the best images. I don't know why women think it is creepy? My hubby and I were so excited to see the baby before birth and discuss who's features she had. It was amazing and just got us more and more excited to meet her. This time around I have my 3D ultrasound scheduled for 27 weeks 5 days and we can hardly wait. Last time I was 33 weeks and things were a bit squished. I am 21 weeks 5 days today. Congratulations by the way.
