I know this sounds crazy but I didn't realize I was pregnant until I was out of my first trimester and about 12 weeks pregnant!! I was drinking alcohol socially but on a few occasions I had like 4 or 5 glasses of wine and I"m soooo nervous. I"m looking up info. on fetal alcohol syndrome and it seems that I can't find out if I did any harm to my baby and I might not see the effects of the alcohol right away.. Anyone else have any similar experiece?

Try not to stress too much. There is no real definate answer as to when in the fetal development or how much alchol intake is needed to cause any problems. That is why they suggest to just stay away. I know a bit about this as my SIL went through it as well and didn't find out until she was 15 weeks, due to a long story. But the baby doesn't actually start to take anything from you directly until the placenta and umbilical cord are fully formed and functional and that is near the end of the first tri. I am sure that you have done no harm to your baby and all is just fine. My SIL went on to have a healthy baby with no effects fro any of that. If you are still worried, check wiht your dr and see if there is any way to have an ultrasound done to ensure everything is developing normaly. Don't put your self under undue stress, it is not good fo ryou. I am sure all is fine and babe is healthy and happy. Best of luck!! :) and CONGRATS!!!

What softbreeze said is totally right...your placenta doesn't take over until around 12 weeks and that is when you should be more concerned. Do tell your doctor though so that they can watch for things in the ultrasounds if possible. I'm sure that everything is fine!

the same thing happened to a friend of mine. Like the girls said, don't worry to much about it. You were drinking socially and not all the time. Her daughter is 3 and healthy and bright! she's a doll. I'm sure you're baby will be fine. The people who continue to drink heavily during pregnancy are the ones who have problems. You didn't know you were prego and you know now and you won't drink. you'll have a healthy, beautiful baby. Just let your dr know and I'm sure he/she will tell you the same things we have. Good luck :)
