Bright Bowel In 20 Week Ultrasound

Have any of you been told that your baby has a bright or echogenic bowel? I have had two ultrasounds that confirmed a bright bowel. They say it could be Downs, Cystic Fibrosis, baby swallowed blood, bowel is forming abnormally, or in 90% of cases, totally normal! In first trimester screening I tested at lowest risk for Downs (1 in 10,000) and if it was Downs, other markers should have appeared, such as an enlarged heart, which baby's heart is fine. I tested negative for Cystic Fibrosis and apparantly both parents need to be postive for the gene in order to pass to baby. They suggested I do an amnio, but it seems too much since they aren't really sure what it is and again, that 90% of cases it is normal. Have any of you given birth with a baby with a bright bowel? What happened? Thanks for any advice. I'm kinda mad that they told me about this when it seems the likelihood that something is really wrong is pretty low.

I think that the reason they told you about it was just to let you know that it's a possibility, even a low one. That way you could prepare for whatever it was. I haven't had this, however I do talk to a lot of other pregnant women on a different site that have had similar things and were offered another U/S or the amnio. There is an u/s that they can do to test further without doing the amnio. If they told you there's a 90% chance everything is normal and you believe that I would say to not do the amnio. Could it have been the way the baby was positioned and the way the u/s machine itself bounced off baby? (I'm not exactly sure how the machine does what it does, so I don't know if it's possible, but with 90% being normal I would say it might be possible.) I'm sorry that I couldn't be of any help. If I find anything out, I'll post back.

Thanks Isabellasmommy for your response. Can you tell me what other site you were on that women talked about this?

The site that I was talking about is babycenter.com I use both this site and the babycenter one and love both of them. I think that it gives you more opinions on things, especially if you're worried. I hope the site helps you.

I had a girlfriend who had the same thing, but on the heart. The techs said it could be due to a number of things such as reflections from tendons. Her DD was born fine. Further this, she had a u/s later in the pg and the spot was gone. I wouldn't go through an amnio for something like this... especially if all the serious things have been pretty much ruled out.
