nonuny- Why are they asking you to do an amnio? What might a calcium deposit in the baby's tummy indicate? When I went for my 18 wk scan, my baby had a calcuim deposit on his liver. All they had me do was have another follow up scan which I had last week and it was still there so I have another scan at 36 weeks. I would only do an amnio if there is a high risk of a serious problem since the amnio itself carries a risk of miscarriage. Personally, I feel most hospitals/Doctors push the amnio when it's not always necessary (sometimes it is though).

Thanks, do you think I should ask for a 2nd Ultra Sound few weeks later?

nonuny, I definitely think you should ask to have a second u/s opinion. My SO's coworker's wife is also pregnant, she is about 14w right now and a couple of weeks ago they did an u/s on her and thought they saw something so they sent her to the hospital the next week to have another u/s and they didn't see anything. The machine at the hospital is better and they are more trained technicians and they were sure that it was just a mistake on the part of the original u/s tech. Ask questions as well. Ask them what an amnio might be able to tell them if there IS a deposit. Like clindholm I don't really see what the amnio would help them determine about the possible deposit. Then you'll be more educated about what's going on with you and your body and be more comfortable with whatever decision you make. Personally if it's something that isn't of any concern or isn't something they can fix then I don't think I would be willing to have the amnio, however if it was something more serious and the amnio would possibly help them diagnose and come up with a plan to take care of the problem, I think I would have to overcome my fears and have the amnio. It does carry a risk and isn't something I think should be done for no reason but honestly the risk is extremely low and it's probably more likely that you'll get hurt crossing the street or something, so that's good news.

I asked the Genetic Counseller and she told me that she is not sure of how serious is as she is not a doctor? I did the Blood Test so they possibly check if I have any Virus or any infection & my test results will be coming by early next week. Before I think of Amnio I would like to consult with specialist. I am meeting my doctor today & will post her comments later today.
Thanks ..

I would certainly wait on scheduling the amnio. I did a quick check on this and don't see anything other than the possibility of infection which it sounds like your doctor sent you for testing as did mine and for me, nothing came up. Usually Genetic Counsellors are more informed than that, so hopefully your doctor can clarify for you. You can search online for "Echogenic Foci Fetus Abdomen" etc. and see what else you see (I have to get back to work, so can't spend alot of time looking it up). The Echogenic Foci are just the bright spots that are seen on the ultrasound to indicate calcuim deposits. I agree that the amnio risk is lower than it once was, but the decision is not to be taken lightly. Knowing of 2 lost pregnancies from Amnio, I wouldn't risk it unless there was a very serious concern. Good luck and let us know what the doctor says.

I met with my Doctor & she said let's wait for Monday's Blood Result & we'll take it from there.
My other two Genetic Blood Test were 100% normal & my Doctor is very positive that baby is fine. & she also said- she hasn't see any high risk case of Calcium near abdomen and if this would have been near heart , liver or brain things would have been different.
I will be getting back on Monday with the updates.
Thanks Everyone who replied my post.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me yesterday when I went in for my level 2 Ultrasound. I am 19 weeks and 3 days and they told me the same thing - everything looked good but they found a calcification or calcium deposit around the baby's abdomen. My doctor told me that this kind of thing happens all the time and it will probably clear up in the next few weeks when they do another ultrasound but wanted me to have some blood drawn anyway just in case.
The ultrasound for the fetus' heart turned out good, no defects but the ultrasound I did before that (the one where they measure the fluid in the back of the baby's neck to see what the chances of it having down synrome) came out ok but there was a little bit more fluid in the back of baby's neck than they wanted to see. After they did the combined screening (where they take my blood and combine it with my age, fetus' age, how far along I am, etc.) they discovered that my risk for having a down syndrome baby is very small.
Usually babies born with down syndrome have heart problems which I already know that my baby doesnt. But now, because of the amount of fluid in the ack of baby's neck along with the calcium deposit in the abdomen, my doctor had me do some blood tests.
I have been looking up info on it and the only thing I came up with (to my understanding) is that sometimes fetal bowel movements can cause some sort of infection in the fetus? I think?
Anyway I am going through the same thing as you but I am curious to know if your combined screening came back normal (when they measured the fluid inside the back of the baby's neck)??

I met with spceialist on Friday (26th) & he did the advance ULTRASOUND of a baby & he suggested a Amnio too so I finally got it done. It went great and now I am waiting for the Results? I also did my BLOOD Test before Amnio & all the reports will be coming this week? I am very worried but keeping my fingers cross!

Good luck, hope all goes well. Why did they recommend an amnio, is there a specific problem or disorder a__sociated with a calcium deposit on the abdomen?

Did they make you fully aware of the risks of amino? Miscarriage? Unrecognised intrauterine death? Premature birth? 3rd trimester stillborn? All of which amino has shown to cause. Why would they take a risk like that if they only abnormal thing they seen was a calcium deposit. Which is something that usually clears up on its own. I would have definately gotten a second opinion on a matter of such importance.
