I had my 12 week check-up today and was told that at my next visit I would be tested for the recessive gene for cystic fibrosis. Apparently, it is a recessive gene condition only, so if I test negative, my husband wouldn't have to be tested. Also, my doctor said that this is a new development to test all pregnant women for the gene (even those not at risk). I did not have the test four years ago with my first pregnancy. I just wondered if others are having this test?

I am also interested in if people take tests like this and the spina bifida screening. I have always thought of these as a way to "screen" babies and led to families aborting "abnormal" babies (which is not an option for us). For this reason, I was sceptical about taking them. I have been impressed with the small amount of research I have done, however. It seems like these sorts of tests can also be used to begin advanced treatment options, even in utero. If people don't mind answering, why do you choose to or not to take these types of tests? Has anyone had positive outcomes that stemmed from early detection?

Hello! I am 11 1/2 weeks. At my first dr. appt, I peed in a cup and gave blood, I really did not know what all was being examined. A few weeks later the dr. called and said I test positive as a carrier for cystic fibrosis. News to me!! My husband had to go get tested. After many anxious and sleepless nights we found out he is negative. So the baby will be fine. However, I did not know that they tested for that. Now, I feel that I would rather not have that fear and anxiety again. I will not opt for any other tests. Good luck to you, Katharine!!

We have opted not to take these tests b/c there are no cases in either of our families. We were warned that there are false positives and that we didn't need to worry if no one in our family previously had these diseases. We also would not terminate the pregnancy even if the results were positive, so we thought why should we get all worked up? Good luck to you all.
