Fifths Disease Parvovirus

I have recently found out I contracted fifths disease in my pregnancy (I am 19 1/2 weeks right now, not sure when it was contracted as I have no symptoms). Everything I read says there is still a low risk to the baby, but that anemia and hydrops are a potential risk. Has anyone ever experienced this before? I know one teacher (like myself) who has, and her baby was just fine, but she had to have weekly ultrasounds. We happen to have had an ultrasound a day before I found this out and the tech said baby was "beautiful", so we're praying he or she stays that way!

Hi becky, how did they diagnose fifths disease since you didn't have any symptoms? I ask because a family member got it over a month ago and then at easter we went to have dinner at another family member's house and he was there. My mom even called L&D before we went and talked to a dr. to make sure it was ok and the dr. said yes. They also said it is only pa__sed via blood, saliva, etc, but I still worry about it! How did you get it may I ask?

Hi Becky, I hope everything goes ok. I am sure everything will be ok. I am a teacher too and there was a student in another cla__s in our school that had that as well. My nurse told me that since I had a child in my cla__s years ago that had it and I had been exposed to it that I would probably have nothing to worry about. It is a big worry being around students all the time that are sick. How did you find out you have it?

bump..............I'm really wanting to know more about this as I'm going to be concerned until I can call the nurse monday. Forevermissed how did you know you got it from a child in your cla__s years ago? I'm just nervous about the no symptoms thing. I have no idea if I had this as a child or not. Also the person I was around that had it actually had it a month prior to the day we were in the same house so I don't really think he had it anymore...still a concern though to me i guess.

Stefkay, I don't know if I ever got it. I never broke out in a rash or anything. But, the nurse said since I was around that child then I probably had nothing to worry about. I don't think you have anything to worry about either.

Hi, You can only find out if you have immunity through a blood test (or if you have been recently exposed as I was). Actually - I hav no idea where I got it or when..... my dr said they are starting to make it a routine prenatal test (like when they test you for measles immunity etc in the beginning of your pregnancy). It is rampant at this time of year, and you can even get it at a grocery store etc. Usually pa__ses like a cold does - body contact, from someone coughing, sneezing etc. Most adults don't get any symptoms. If you think you have been in contact, get a blood test.

Also stefkay - once a person has the rash (if they get it) they are no longer contagious. By the time they are diagnosed, they would pose no danger to you at that time.

forevermissed - I would also recommend the blood test for you. I have been around it several times in my teaching career, and was obviously not immune as I just contracted it recently. My board of ed is now recommending the immunity test for all women pregnant or expecting to be (as the test goes through a public health lab here in Canada, and can take up to 2 weeks for results).

so becky, you found out you had it because you were around someone who had it so you asked for the blood test -- or was it given to you as a general panel by your OB? I am going to call mind tomorrow and explain the situation and see what she says. The nurse is who I usually talk to and she is sooooo lax about everything so I doubt they'll be concerned. I hate worrying about it though!

Stefkay.... a girl at my school had it, so I had my blood test the next day. It revealed it was already active in my system, so it couldn't have been from her (as it takes 3 days to get into your blood), but likely other kids in the school had it and their parents just didn't notice or tell us.
